I have taken it orally for years for RA. The only side effect is that in knocking down immune system I am more susceptible to colds that turn into phneumonia, etc.
Best wishes to you.

Montana wrote:@Kitty Galore, askapatient.com is a good site for reviews by people using various drugs. There are reviews there for methotrexate.
Another good source for info about meds, treatments, clinical trials, and more: patientslikeme.com

My son tried Methotrexate(shot it in his stomach) for his UC...didn't work. Neither did Humira. He now gets the Entyvio injections every 8 weeks, on top of daily Imuran and one other one.
Side-effects aren't good for any of these, I almost panic when he gets a cold. But he would die without it so doesn't have a choice.
I'm on Prednisone again...ugh. All I have to say about that!
Wishing you the best of luck...it's so hard to know what to do sometimes.

@Iluvlucy you are so right, it is very difficult finding the right meds and more important ones that don't give horrible side effects. I gave been on predisone in the lady , started with it, miracle drug but boy the died effects are terrible , at least for me. Best of luck to your son. It's not fun having health issues I know.

Methotrexate is actually a chemo drug which is used often for autoimmune diseases at smaller doses than when used for cancer. (Therefore people do not lose their hair when taking it for autoimmune diseases since the dose is smaller). Many people cannot tolerate it due to its side effects., but some patients can tolerate it, and it helps improve their autoimmune issues. I know of someone whose lupus went into a "remission" state due to Methotrexate so her joints enbaled her to do the NYC marathon!
Personally I was just prescribed Methotrexate but I was worried since I know a lot about it. I told my rheumatologist I refuse to take it.... but since my joint pain is destroying my quaility of life, it's time for me to give it a try for 2-3 months! I will start after the new year....jan 2017.
BTW...ask your doctor "how long" he/she expects you to take methotrexate.
Keep track of any unacceptable side effects..or how it may be helping you...or not helping you. If you cannot tolerate it, or if it does not help in 2-3 months, then your doctor needs to be informed. Make sure your doctor checks labs quite often to check your liver, lungs, etc. when taking Methotrexate. I recommend keeping a journal when on this medication or any potent medication. : ) I hope it helps you!
