wow, you all have been beyond helpful. I would have thought plant based and vegetarian would be the same. A little confused about that. Like I mentioned before we ate a lot of dairy, really can't remember what all our diet consisted of but my favorite cookbook was all vegetables and many of the recipes had dairy, cheeses etc. I didn't have a clue that not eating dairy was a majpr thing.

A whole foods plant based diet is vegan, but not all vegans eat whole foods. Some vegans eat processed foods and oils, they just don't eat food from animal sources.
A whole food plant based diet does not include any animal products.

@Nadine wrote:sidsmon, not sure what you mean. Are you saying that other terms sell the lifestyle better?
Hey @Nadine!
Everyone upthread has given wonderful explanations!
For so many years, vegetarian was the go-to term...even for those
choosing not to eat dairy/eggs/honey/etc. Around 2000, the term
’vegan’ got a strong marketing foothold...and they separated from the
‘vegetarian’ moniker. Today, there’s been another separation called
’plant based’. Almost a good-better-best scenario in terms of
ethics & health.
In the 60-70’s, when someone was vegetarian there were lots of health benefits. 50 yrs later, we’re slowly finding out a vegetarian diet today, with dairy/eggs, is really not much better than a diet w/ meat included...
that’s how bad dairy/eggs are. Years from now, we’ll be saying the same
thing about bottled oils/meat substitutes.
Maybe in our lifetime. there will be a paradigm shift...and a WFPB diet
will be the new Standard American Diet. Fingers crossed!

@Nadine I am whole food plant based vegan. The whole foods means I avoid processed food, oil, dairy, salt, eggs, meat. Some are not as strict with the salt and oil. I am vegan also which incorporates a lifestyle that is concerned about the environment, ethical treatment or lack of regarding all sentient beings, and for health reasons. What I wear, products I use in my home, cosmetics/bath products, concern for the earth, and animals permeates my life as well as the food I consume. WFPB can also have these concerns, but may not identify as a vegan. Some vegans may not identify as WFPB and eat junk food....processed and fast food. Not all vegan food is healthy. We had this discussion at my workshop last week. WFPB is all about the food and vegan is all about incorporating not eating meat, dairy, eggs, and concern for the environment and animals. Obviously these concerns can cross over. @sidsmom please chime in if you have anything to add. You are our resident whole foods plant based pro here!

so if I don't eat meat or dairy, use salt and oil would am I a vegan? Not sure about that. Used to be vegetarian was no meat. Vegan was no meat and no houehould products that were not vegan, not wearing leather, fur etc. My plan is no meat or dairy. I think it used to be so much simpler. Interesting about the eggs. We did paleo for awhile so this is a comple shift.

It can be simple!
Just call it ‘Nadine’s No Meat No Dairy Plan’ 😀
I’m wondering...with your curiosity of nutritional plan names,
are you having to explain your different way of eating to
friends/family/co-workers?

@Nadine Keep it simple! It really doesn't matter what you call it....just eat plants and thrive! !

I've been a vegetarian for over 23 years. I've tried going vegan many times and always fail. I always fall back to eating eggs and milk. I would love to eliminate any animal products. I don't wear leather nor wool. I admire all the vegans here,it's not easy. At least not for me. 😕 I'll keep trying.
