I know we have discussed this drug before..I have had two shots, and no side effects.

I am having an issue with my doctor about stopping the shot, she has told me and I have read that once you start the shots you cannot stop them, with out real damage to the bones.

I thought I did my homeowrk about the drug before I started it but obviously not well enough. my fracture risk was high according to my dexa scan and I will be honest it scared me a bit so I started the shots.

IF I want to see another doctor to discuss this...is there a specialist that deals with bones and womens health?  I am not in a metro area so finding a specialist will not be in my immediate area, I don't have an issue traveling to see a doctor, I am just not sure what speciality, if there is one, to look for.

thanks

@Mom2Dogs

I've been going to an osteoporosis clinic here locally. That's where I was referred to by my PCP.  I did get two shots of Prolia. The first one was no problem but the second one caused some serious side effects so I can't take it any more. I had to get Reclast to prevent rebounding from the Prolia. The osteoporosis clinic said it wasn't a problem  to stop Prolia as long as I got bisphosphinate soon after my last Prolia dose. Currently I'm waiting to get a Dexa scan to see how the Reclast worked out.

I hope you can find a bone clinic near you. That's probably your best option. Either that or an endocrinologist. Around here there is a 1-year wait to see an endocrinologist so that's why I ended up at the bone clinic where a NP treated me.

Re: Another PROLIA question

[ Edited ]

Thanks @SilleeMee   I am so mad at myself about starting the drug..which was out of fear.

I have near heard of a bone clinic I will see if there is one near by I do know there is an endocrinologist about an hour from me.

Do you think you would have continued the shots if you had not had issues after the 2nd one?   I have a friend that told me (she is a dental hygenist) that where she works they do not like working on patients that take Prolia.

I googled bone clinics but I am getting ortho related searches....I don't think that is what you meant is it...

So I looked further and I found a clinic about an hour from me that deals with osteprosis and bone fracture risk...I am going to call on Monday and see what they have to say..hoping appointments are not scheduled out for months.

@Mom2Dogs

I would search for 'osteoporosis clinics' specifically. We have one that is located in an ortho hospital here so some osteoporosis management offices can be found in ortho settings.

The only reason I started with Prolia was b/c I was told that it was to follow the Evenity I got to prevent rebounding from Evenity. I was told that Prolia would be better than bisphos for that and for long-term bone density management instead of bisphos. I was willing to continue with Prolia but it didn't agree with me and my NP marked it as an 'allergy' on my chart in the end.  So there's that.

@Mom2Dogs

My Dexa scan numbers were shockingly and scary-low when I went into getting it managed. Because my numbers were so low I was at a very high risk for fracture and that was the reason for getting me on Evenity right away to build new bone quickly. Evenity gave me 13% increase just after the 12-month treatment. It was a quick fix relatively speaking so I am happy about that. Evenity is a once-in-a-lifetime treatment for high risk for fracture patients but it has to be followed by bisphos or Prolia indefinitely.

If you take a biophosphate, you will run into the same concerns with dental care.

My dentist would not extract my fractured tooth because I take a biophosphate.  He referred me to an oral surgeon who recommended a drug holiday before doing any work.

But, I am back to my regular dentist for the bridge and cleanings.

Good luck ... hope you get an appointment with a bone specialist soon.

I am Prolia and when my first scan showed loss I was referred to an endocrinologist.  I was already seeing him for aftercare for one of my cancers, so we just have more to talk about.

I have also discovered that some do diabetes only and some do other things.  Would be worth it to ask.

@Still Raining   I a confused a bit...what are you saying about diabetes...does that relate to PROLIA?

My box and @ are wonky today. Sorry.

I was merely meaning that some endocrinologists specialize. Didn’t know that when I started out. In my practice some only see diabetics patients. Worth a question.

I don't think this is correct information about taking it forever. But once one stops taking any of these "bone building" meds, any advantages of supposed bone building stop.

I take prolia due to having a very sensitive stomach and esophagus issue and the other types of "bone building" drugs are harder on the stomach. I have osteoporosis. What I have researched is to take prolia for 5 years and then stop for a few years or forever. You can easily google search the research on prolia. The issue can be a small risk of jaw bone issues.

My friend refused to take her health and her bone health as a concern. She has broken several bones just walking which is the upper stages of osteoporosis. Then the dreaded bad hip break came. My friend goes on the web and finds non-scientific information about prolia. She did ask me about my taking it and I had just double checked the research on it so was able to give her truthful information rather than fear based stuff from the internet. I read the scientific research papers on this drug.

She asked me because I have increased my bone density 7% in a few years probably from combining the prolia with PT for other issues and walking more. My PCP said he has never seen this kind of increase so I must be doing something correct.

Oh, you are advised by the drug manufacturer to take a certain amount of VItamin D and  calcium.
