One of the results I learned from my physical last week is that I am anemic, which could account for my lack of energy. I was taking nexium for asthma induced gerd The Nexium does not allow for stomach absortion I am switch to in Peicid. I will also be starting on 325 mg of Ferrous Sulfate after dinner. Wish my luck

@I am still oxox  Thanks for that information!  My husband was diagnosed with anemia late last year and has gone through all of the "oscopies" - including swallowing a camera. He has one last balloon probe to do and he will be cleared. He has been taking an OTC Prilosec for about 30 years and may just need supplements or occasional infusions. The doctors say they may never know the reason for the low hemoglobin, but the Prilosec might be a possibility. Best wishes for you going forward.

@I am still oxox , I have the same issues as you.  I had to switch off of Nexium a few years ago and my gastro switched me to generic Omeprazole (brand name is Prilosec).  I won't say it works as well as the Nexium for me, but it's still effective.

Interesting @PA Mom-mom , because I was taken off Nexium and put on Prilosec for that reason.  I'm sure they may all have some role in anemia.

As far as the iron supplement, the best one I've found is Feosol with the purple label.  Highly recommended by my gastro and easy on my stomach.  I used to get a weird iron taste in my mouth with other brands.  I can always tell when I don't take my Feosol.  I have it on subscription with Amazon.

Just fyi if you're interested.  Best of luck!

@PA Mom-mom  I've been on Prescription strenth prilosec for 30 years now (Barretts).  I tried the generic years ago and got worse.  I have to purchase the purple box original made in Sweden.  I take one twice a day, sometimes more.

It has never affected my anemia by the way.  Absolutely it can affect iron absorption to a degree but do not believe it is a main cause of an illness.  Just for me, I need to stay on the real Prilosec for life to survive because of the Barretts. Forget generic.

For those anemic a meat dish twice weekly is the best and lately I do not want to eat it anymore.  And I am anemic once again.  I do not believe its from the Proton pump inhibitors. Try a diet change?  I've changed to tuna fish. We see on next blood test.

I am tired thats for sure from anemia but my friends told me color is coming back into my cheeks since eating some fish. As a month ago was ghost like in my pale skin.

Make sure the iron supplement is time released.

And take with food, imo.  Although whatever the doc and pharmacist recommends.

Feosol was excellent, imo, years ago.  Time released capsules.

I now take iron gummies (Nature Made). It's probably a lower dose.  Easy to chew and I always take it while/in between eating food.

There was a time, in the seventies, that taking non-time released iron made me feeling ill.

The pharmacist wondered why so many docs kept prescribing non-time released pills, which, in turn made most of his customers feeling bad.  Too hard on the tummy, I guess.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
