Hello community. My active, positive, husband with healthy habits, 64, is scheduled for open heart surgery in early April. His Type 2 Diabetes is catching up with him, although he has done a good job monitoring it. Instead of giving him 3 stents, they're going to do surgery. He'll be off work for at least a month. Any advice you can give me on caring for him? Thank you for your kindness. Please keep Chip in your prayers and positive thoughts. We're still in shock.

I would go on line and ask about care for patient at home after open heart surgery.  I'll bet Google will give you a bunch of things you can read up on.

I'm sure others here will help you with suggestions or experiences they've had on this.  Good luck to you both and best wishes.

Prayers for you both too.

Re: Advice - Open heart surgery

Ask @hckynut for help. He has been a heart patient and knows a great deal about this and so does @Trinity11

I will pray of course ,but ,beyond that, I really don't have any advice

@cherry  Good to know, thank you. I know hckynut has been a lifelong athlete, as my husband has. I think we're trying to process the news. Unexpected. Thanks again.

Speaking from experience:  Don't Baby Him.  They will give you all the info you need before he leaves the hospital on caring for him.  Treat him like you always have.  Try to get him out even if it's just outside for lunch if the weather is nice.  Malls are great places to walk; flat and lots of people watching.  Many blessings to you both.

@jeanlake

#1   FYI:  @Jubilant has had bypass surgery 4 months ago, I believe and she is coming along great-- exercising, etc.

#2  Will pray for Chip.  Put the word out here and you will have  a lot of good people praying for him.

Years ago, family members of the patient were shown a film about what to expect after their loved one had bypass surgery.

All the best to Chip, you & your family during this stressful time. I'm sure he will do well and come out of it with renewed health.

Re: Advice - Open heart surgery

@jeanlake, my very best wishes to your and DH with the upcoming surgery.  My FIL had a quad bypass done and they had him up and walking very soon after.  He did amazingly well and was older than your DH at the time.  Will keep you in my prayers.  LM
