I had a lot of heartburn for a long time...I took Tums or pepcid but when food coming back up it was time to see GI doctor. The NP started off saying you need a Rx for meds but I said NO something else is going on and it's past that point. I still had to wait for 5 mnths to have an endoscopy. I had erosions in the duodenum. I was given 40 mg of pantropazole for 6 months and removed certain foods from my diet. All nightshades (tomato products, peppers, even potatoes) spicey foods.

@conlt I agree. Not trying to scare anyone but my very dear friend's husband passed away last year from esophageal cancer, for years doctors suggested meds such as Pantoprazole or similar types for his cronic heartburn. Turns out he had advanced esophageal cancer and after 3 years of chemotherapy he passed away.
My neighbor just passed away from the same cancer, he spent many years in Nepal and loved Nepalese food which is very spicy avd even hot. Over time It burned a hole in his esophagus to the point he could no longer hold his food down. Tests showed cancer which had metastacuzed to his spine

I have not heard of drinking a glass of milk before bedtime. Do you feel that this really helps? If so, I will be trying this myself.
I suffer from GERD. I have an appointment next week with my primary, and one of the things that I was going to bring up is constant gagging when brushing my teeth.

If you talk to your doctor about it, just be aware that commonly prescribed PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) contribute to osteoporosis. Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid and others.
Some doctors prescribe short term use of two weeks, but long term use can make your bones brittle. My doctor told me to take Pepcid and make lifestyle changes like quitting coffee, wine and other highly acidic foods.

@Teddixat did either have an Endoscopy performed before their cancer diagnosis?

@Teddixat , did your friend's husband take those meds? How was he finally diagnosed?

@icezeus , use fat-free milk because the fat in milk can aggravate GERD.
