I have GERD, which effects my swallowing.  Twice in the past few years I have ended up in the emergency room with food stuck in my esophagus.  Had to have an endoscopy to have it removed.  The gastro doctor put me on the medication Rabeprazole.  So far so good, this medication has been working very well.  I still have acid reflux once in a while.  My doctor said to take Pepcid AC for flare ups.

You might want to see a gastro doctor, if you continue to have issues.  Acid reflux can cause a lot of other issues, if it is constant.

@quilter61  did your gastroenterologist dilate your esophagus during your endoscopy? I had that same issue and with the dilation it has never been a problem again

@goldensrbest Hi, I am a RN and I suggest you see your doctor. If you have a GI doctor, call them, if not, see your primary MD who will get you where you need to be.

Acid reflux and throwing up are 2 different things. You need a MD to evaluate you.

For what it's worth @goldensrbest , when a friend of mine was in the hospital and asked to a pill for heartburn, the nurse gave her applesauce saying it works the best.

At first she was taking the applesauce (plain or with cinnamon) once in the morning and then once at night.  Now (it's probably been about a year) she only takes the applesauce once a day:  no more hearburn.

I had same symptoms and it ended up being my gall bladder. Once diagnosed, I had surgery within days.  I have felt great ever since,  My advice, go to the doctor.

my mother is prescribed pantoprazole.

she also takes tums because it helps with both the acid and her blood calcium levels. she sees a gastroenterologist at least four times a year.

Thanks for the tip!  I love applesauce and have been snacking on it lately, and for the last month have not been taking my pantoprazole and feeling just fine.

I always love to talk to nurses, they will tell you things that doctors won't.  It was a nurse who told me to drink milk before bedtime, to help cut acid, and it does work.

Re: Acid reflux

[ Edited ]

I have a hiatal hernia so reflux has become my middle name. My tricks:

See a doctor.

Be sure you sit upright for at least 30 minutes after eating.

Take an OTC reflux med. My dr gives me a prescription for it so my copay is Zero.

Watch what you eat. I find greasy, fried, or too spicy foods will set off my reflux. I also avoid green peppers as they guarantee reflux.

Drink plenty of water.

Note: Depending on your age and health, be careful with reflux meds. Per my dad's neurologist and his alzheimer’s specialist, they can inhibit meds and treatments for certain kinds of memory loss and dementia.

Good luck to you.

I agree that you should check with a doctor but my husband (being a man and not liking doctors) takes papaya tablets after dinner to help digest dinner.  At first I was offended because it was every night and I try to cook healthy with lots of fruits and veggies, but if it makes him feel better why not?  I buy the large size chewables through Vitacost.

@m0rgan  what does papaya have that helps?
