New England Fall Foliage Dates

I am planning a trip this year to see the fall foliage in New England, and am wanting to book my flights now.

I've done a little research online, and have come up with the first two weeks in October.

I'm thinking of flying into Boston, then driving north along the coast to Maine, then head back on a western route, through NY back to Boston.

For those of you who live, or have traveled in the area, would this be the best time to see the prettiest foliage?

Thanks so much for your feedback, and any other tips!

Re: New England Fall Foliage Dates

I lived in New England much of my adult life.  The second week of October is a bit risky.  I would recommend the last week of Sept. or the first week of Oct.  Maybe someone who lives there now will respond to you.

And when you see that, come on down to the Smokey Mountains in TN & NC.

Our trees turn a bit later, mid to late October.

Re: New England Fall Foliage Dates

@TeezNu  I have to agree that the 2nd week in Oct. is risky.  there are SO many factors that dictate when the leaves will turn it's never a set date.  Some things to remember are that the Higher you go (towards Canada way) the sooner it will peak.  Oct. at the boarder may be Past peak.  And One good rainstorm and you're done for the season, the leaves all get washed off the trees.  Also there will be a Wicked lotta traffic on Colombus day weekend as that is traditional "Camp" closing weekend. Bring a Jacket then as it'll be cold up there by then.  Check the state tourisim sites and maybe Yankee Magazine to see if they are on track with the foliage this year.  You have a good plan doing a downward loop.  Make your hotel reservations ASAP when you've finalized everything. rooms book up fast during leaf peeping season. It's beautiful and the fleetingness of it makes it all the more special.
