If you are checking your luggage take at least one outfit in your carry on, you never know.

1) Do I have to take the "liquids" bag out of my carryon and place it in the tray? Or does it stay in the carryon and is scanned that way? You will place your liquids (3 oz or less each) in a 1 quart baggie. When going through TSA check, you must take the baggie with the liquids out of your bag and place it in the bin. You'll also remove your coat and shoes, they go in the bin. If carrying a computer, that also goes in the bin.
2) And if the liquids bag is in my checked bag, no need to worry about it, right? That's correct. You could theoretically have a suitcase full of shampoos, body wash and other liquids - and it's fine as long as you check that bag.
3) Can I have a couple of liquids bags? See--I have no idea what I'm doing although on my most recent driving trips, I have bought things in mind of possible future flights so do have one travel set that meets the requirements. No, you can only have one 1-quart bag with liquids in your carry on/personal item.
4) Can I pack breakfast bars in my checked luggage? Sure, no problem there.
5) I am so, so, so, so glad that you said I can have a hardcopy boarding pass as well as the digital ticket? I feel reasonably sure I will check in with a person vs. the kiosk, since I don't know what I'm doing. Will they issue the hardcopy boarding pass at that time if I ask them, too? Or how do I get that? If you go to the check in desk, you can get your hard copy boarding pass, but you also can get one by checking in at a kiosk.
6) And my last question...is it okay to have medications and supplements in daily minder containers? Or do they have to be in the original prescription bottles? You can have your medications as you indicated, they do not need to be in original containers. I've never had that questioned - that's how I carry my meds. Also, be sure you take all of your medications with you in your personal item/carry on. You definitely don't want to check those.I don't fly as much as some people but I've always found the airport and airline personnel to be very helpful and patient. At the Salt Lake City airport, I got off an elevator and was looking around with a "deer in the headlights" look and one of the security guards came right up to me, asking do I need any help, and she promptly pointed out the way I needed to proceed.Enjoy your trip!

You can always count on the Q forum for top-notch help!
I always have a refillable bottle (empty) to stay hydrated. I like drinking sports drink for electrolytes to stay hydrated and less bathroom break.
I highly recommend packing cubes. I have a few of the Open Story packing cubes from Target.
I have no issue asking: where's Gate 13? how do I ...

@Ainhisg I'm mostly a solo air traveler but do fly often. Even so, always watch Youtube videos before flying. Travel Tips by Laurie help so much, just to help get me in travel mode. And her tips help so much with travel anxiety! Laurie has many helpful videos and also from a woman's POV! (makeup, skincare, wardrobe ideas) I have mobility challenges, so I book wheelchair access. Do have to keep alert with using mobilty help. sometimes they are short staffed, there can be delays. I get to my home airport 2 hours early.
Also I avoid drinking water, soda, coffee before flights. for obvious reasons - hate to have to use the plane lav !! I bring snacks in baggies, like mini PB crackers. I have also pre-ordered airline breakfast meals, but now I try to grab a wrap or sandwich in one of the shops by the gates. nice to have a bite to eat once you get settled in the air.
Also planning to apply for TSA precheck soon.

@AnnieBelle thank you for your clear and concise answers to my questions. I can't begin to tell you how much better I feel about everything, and I appreciate your specific responses--about how I will have to take the liquids bag out, put my coat in the bin, can put breakfast bars in my checked luggage, etc. Have a blessed day!

@Ainhisg wrote:Excellent idea! When I would go to Florida to visit mom I often would ship my things in advance. It may cost more but I have found flying very stressful so I have done whatever I can to make it less so.
I realize that you just don't fly much at all but for others who do I found that getting TSA pre check a great stress reliever. The last few years that I've flown I also went either first or business class....it's much smoother and they treat you better. I realize that's not doable for everyone but the additional cost was worth it to me.
One thing that I found to be stressful over the years is going through security when traveling alone. I always take most jewelry off and put it in a spot in my carry on easy to find.
Try not to wear any metal if you can ( I do wear an underwire bra) because that might trigger them to scan you more...all while your things are going through the security system. I try to go through the same time my bag is going through.
Make sure nothing is in your pockets. My brother forgot to take his wallet and phone out of his pocket and they made him put them in a bin....these items should be securely placed in your bag.
He almost lost his phone because it didn't come through with his other items. He kept asking them and they finally found it. Don't let this happen to you.
@haddon9 thank you for the additional information! 1) So you can't keep on your jewelry while going through security? I can put my jewelry like in a little case or bag and just keep it in my carry on? (It won't be a lot.)
2) All I wear are underwire bras. Does that usually trigger the scanner? Do I just tell them that's what it is, or do I just stand there and let them scan me?
3) So it sounds like I would need to take my liquids bag out of my carry-on to put in the tray, and I also need to put my phone in the tray? Do my glasses need to be taken off and put in the tray? I know I need to put the actual bags in the tray(s) but have no clue what needs to be removed from them to be scanned.
1) Let's just say that some of the scanners that you go through are more sensitive than others. I was getting stopped a lot for an extra scan so I decided to not wear my jewelry. I put it in a small ziplock bag in my personal items bag.
2) I always wear an underwire bra and this has not caused any problems.
3) As far as the liquids bag, I really don't remember since I have been doing precheck for several years. As others have mentioned, put everything in your plastic bag near the top for easy access if you do have to take it out.
That and a laptop, tablet, e-reader (but I don't remember now) would be the only things that you need to take out. It also depends on the airport. I usually fly out of Philly and they have the nastiest TSA agents in my opinion....even worse than Newark.
You do not have to take out your phone!....thank goodness! To me your phone and wallet are lifelines....it's hard to do much without them. Just bury them down into a pocket of your personal items bag and check once you go through security to make sure all is well.
I wear glasses and you can leave yours on. Do not put your phone in the bin just lying there! That's how my brother almost lost his. Instead put it in a pocket of your personal items bag.
Getting through security is the worst part.
When you purchased your ticket did you opt for a lower boarding number ? Depending on the airline you can purchase some perks which may or may not be worth it to you. I ask because that can make a difference if you get to board sooner vs later since lots of people will use up the overhead space and you might have to go back several rows to store your bag. (this happened to me)....or they will make you check it ( will not cost you) if there is not enough room overhead.
For your personal items bag, you can store it under the seat in front of you. If you have a carry on in addition, it will have to be stored overheard.

OP here...I wish there was a way I could easily tag everyone in this thread to thank all of you for your help. You have no idea how much better and more confident I feel about the trip. Thank you; thank you; THANK YOU!

@haddon9 again...thank you for your detailed reply. I won't wear my jewelry and just do what you do, and thank you for telling me about the phone. Somehow, I got the idea that it would need to go into the tray, but I will have that and my wallet in the bottom of my bag.
I have not purchased my plane ticket yet. This future trip to visit my long distance friend came out of the blue two days ago. I found out that she and her husband are moving from the area, and she knows I have always wanted to see San Antonio and Magnolia Market, so as soon as she knew that they were moving away by this time next year (they are building a house in a different state), we knew we had to make the trip happen sooner rather than later. And now I can finally visit her, since my mom has passed as have my pups. (Which is sad, of course, but it is what it is...)
I was looking at the American Airlines website this morning and did see that they have four classes of tickets. If I can remember the names correctly, they are budget, main, main plus, and first class. I did see that each upper class offers more benefits including loading order, so I will consider that. I know I will have to check a bag...I definitely know that...so either the three or upper two classes offer one free checked bag, and with the additional perk(s), that will likely be the way to go.

@Ainhisg I haven't flown in a few years but when I did my #1 rule: Wear comfortable clothes and shoes!
I personally make sure my bladder is empty long before boarding and I drink nothing on the plane (my flights were only 2.5 hours) as I HATE the little lavatories on planes.
Bon Voyage when you fly!
