I considered making the movie an event of sorts by seeing it in a theater.  I am glad I didn't do that:/

It was just okay.

2 Great films along these lines. 1. The Cardinal stars Tom Tryon, John Houston .Burgess Meredith. It is about a young man and his steps up through the church. It is also somewhat contemporary.

2. Shoes of the Fisherman stars Anthony Quinn ,David Jansen. Anthony Quinn is a priest  who is a prisoner in a Russian prison but is freed. David Jansen is particularly good in this film.

There are many scenes in these 2 films that brought tears to my eyes.

No spoilers, but I hated the ending.  I thought it was contrived and if you pay attention to the "clues" throughout the movie, you can figure out what's coming.  I was also disappointed that Isabella Rossellini's role wasn't bigger.  The acting overall was very good, but the storyline wasn't what I expected.

After watching it, I was reminded of a great movie from the past, "The Shoes of the Fisherman" with Anthony Quinn that dealt with the Vatican and Cold War politics based on an early 1960's book of the same name.

I thought the movie was quite good & pretty authentic with a great cast. I didn’t read the book but my impression was that the Cardinal was born with a defect & elected not to have surgery because “God would love him as he was”

@Jaspersmom: Oscar Werner was fab in this film. I also remember him in a "Columbo".

I believe it is called "Playback" . Gena Rowlands plays his wife (whose little dog are you?) one of the great Columbos and kind of about the future of electronics.

PS: The wig on Martha Scott has to go!!

Isabella Rossellini was also excellent in it.  I think she is a wonderful actress.

I'm not Catholic first of all. Just interested in the whole process of how they elect the new pope.

Sure made one stop to think if the ending would be possible in real life.

Would be interesting to ask those in authority what

they think.

@SharkE  I am I of the  catholic faith.  I certainly hope it never is .  I don't believe if the knowledge were known it would , but like in the movie it wasn't so .......

I read the book first and highly recommend it.  It gives greater understanding to the ending.  I didn't like the ending, but I understood it better than in the movie.

I loved the cinematography of the movie.  Every set was beautiful and photographed so wonderfully.  And the acting was classic.  There aren't many movies made this way anymore.

Overall, the picture was enjoyable and it was fascinating to see the in's and out's of the conclave even if it was not 100% accurate as we know movies take liberties when telling a story based on something. The ending though? Not even remotely believable especially when it comes to power struggles and the desire for power.
