Re: THE FUGITIVE "WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS" DAVID JANSSEN, DIANA HYLAND MONDAY 2:00 A.M. EAST

@Oznell @Pearlee  I suspect he knew who Kimble was. I started thinking that when they were talking in the car after rescuing the baby which of course is my memorable exchange this week. I was further convinced when the Sargeant asked him as they were leaving if he ever figured out who Kimble was. McCarthy said no but when it was suggested they could go through some mug shots, he quickly replied that wasn't necessary. This is one of those things we'll agree to disagree on.

“He alright?“

“Sleep.“

“You’re pretty handy with kids.“

“They cry. You pick them up.“

“That was a decent thing you did. I mean take someone like you on the road, hopping freights. Safe bet that kind of guy’s got a record he’s running from. You know what I mean?“

“I’m not sure.”

“Most of the time they’re parole jumpers. Run away kids. Once in a while even a wanted criminal. On the other hand sometimes you find really decent people bumming around…What I’m trying to say is a guy who’s on the run from the police isn’t likely to come forth like you did. They’d hop the first freight out of town.“

“You mean if he was in some sort of trouble?”

“That’s right. If he was in some sort of trouble.

[Stopping the car.]  Alright if I drop you here?

[Kimble looks out the window and sees the sign: ‘Bus Depot’.] “Might save you some time. If I take you back, there’ll be all sorts of questions. Pictures in the paper.“

“Well thanks.“

“That’s all right Broderick. That’s right, isn’t it? Broderick?"

[Kimble gets out the car and leans into the window.] “Yeah that’s right.“

“For my report you know. So long.“

Re: THE FUGITIVE "WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS" DAVID JANSSEN, DIANA HYLAND MONDAY 2:00 A.M. EAST

Tique. Yeah we can disagree on this. That comment he made to Hogan about the mug shots-- I think McCarthy didn't want to know whom he was letting go, or his real name. I think he knew Broaderick was running from the law and had decided to let him go because of his decency. I think he didn't want to know any more than that, lest he be letting a terrible criminal go (like a murderer!)

But there are certainly arguments to be made on each side and as I said before, we only have the script to go on.

What do you think about the other part of oznell's question, about George last week knowing (or not) it was Kimble when he let him go?

Also, I thought your previous posted quote about Mrs Fisher was your passage of the week. Good to see another one.

@Tique,  I loved that significant, meaning-laden, terse, dialog between the two at the time, and you posting it here, in full, allows us to savor that in full!

Wow, you are persuasive and I am pretty impressionable, b/c I'm wavering again between the two 'did he know' or 'didn't he know' scenarios.....

But good point @Pearlee ,  about McCarthy "not wanting to know"---  that is plausible...  oh, my, it's rare for me when there are points of such considerable weight on each side!

Re: THE FUGITIVE "WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS" DAVID JANSSEN, DIANA HYLAND MONDAY 2:00 A.M. EAST

I think McCarthy was too good and dedicated of a cop not to bring Kimble in if he had figured out who he was ( which I kind of posted already above). He was good enough to know Kimble was running from the law, but that he was also decent so he let him go which I don't think he would have done if he knew Kimble was a convicted murderer. He seemed like a straight arrow cop but was giving a decent guy a break. George last week on the other hand was flaky and not a straight arrow cop so he knew who Kimble was but let him go for helping Lucy. Plus George himself had killed someone so easy to let Kimble go for a good reason. Not so for McCarthy though.

@Pearlee  I agree with you. George saw the Wanted poster which Amy had liberated from the wall of the police station so he decided to confess. He knew and he allowed Kimble to slip away.

Unless there is some phenomenal dialogue/monologue that doesn't include Kimble [Hasn't happened so far.], the exchange is between him and another character. Even if Kimble only has one line like the pointed and well delivered "Not all of it". Memorable to most of us.

Re: THE FUGITIVE "WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS" DAVID JANSSEN, DIANA HYLAND MONDAY 2:00 A.M. EAST

@Pearlee @Tique @Oznell  - I don't think McCarthy knew Kimble's true identity and probably didn't want to know.  If he knew,  he couldn't in good conscience let him go, the way George did.

I read something funny on Facebook that I had to pass along. It was a post from a group dedicated to old TV shows.   I don't remember this, but they said in the 1960's actors would often do commercials in character for sponsors of their show.  This guy wrote imagine David Janssen saying "Hi, I'm Richard Kimble and when I'm on the run, I only use Samsonite luggage"!!  There was picture of DJ carrying a suitcase.  It made me laugh out loud and I thought of our little group.

Ha, ha, that IS funny, @twinsister !   It could have been luggage, like that guy dreamed up, or perhaps black hair dye for men!   We could be treated to DJ emerging from a shower in a thick terrycloth robe, toweling off his hair, grinning (we never get to see him smiling enough in the series), and holding up the bottle....

@Oznell - True - we don't see him smile enough on the show!!  You came up with a good one - advertising hair dye!.
