Not every relationship is "long haul" material.   

Since the divorce rate continues to fluctuate around 50%, what would be the point of getting married ... even if they do love each other?  

No reason they can't just date and have a good time.

It's also called many other things besides "dating".   

Seeing each other casually, in a relationship, spending time together all come to mind. 

When I was a kid I remember two people whose spouses had died would go out and they called it "keeping company".
