I never heard that GG was offered Norma Desmond.  I did hear that Mae West as offered and turned down the role of Norma Desmond.

 

I saw her a few times in NY when I visited my parents.  She was old but you could still see it was Greta Garbo.  I guess she had a lot of errands to run as she crossed the street.  

Nobody bothered her or even cared.  THe only one that people commented on was Cary Grant.  He worked in NY for 5 years after his retirement from films and lived in the Plaza Hotel.  You used to see him a lot in those days.

Wow, @chloe4578 --  Greta Garbo, and Cary Grant!  That's part of what makes the New York of that period so golden.....
