Joan Rivers / Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

I read an article yesterday that the character on The Marvelouis Mrs. Maisel is based loosely on Joan Rivers.  How wonderful!  I had the pleasure of seeing her once in person. She was blue, but beyond funny.  I am sure I missed half of her jokes because I was laughing so hard.

Re: Joan Rivers / Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

I love this show!  I binged watched the entire second season yesterday, I just could not stop it is so fabulous.  I also heard that this is based on Joan Rivers but I do not see many similarities.  I know they had to change it for the show, it can't mimic her life exactly but her father was a dentist (not a professor), they lived in Larchmont, NY (not the upper East Side), she had one daughter and I don't remember her having another husband besides Edgar (who committed suicide).  But the fact that she was one of a rare breed of women comedians, who also did blue humor, is Joan.  There was also a few other women who broke the mold.  I just love Tony S. in this as well as the entire cast.  Cannot wait until season 3.  The first episode in the Catskills had me in laughing so hard I was crying.

Joan was married once before she married Edgar.

Re: Joan Rivers / Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Season 2 of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premiered about a month ago.  I suspect we will be waiting for awhile until Season 3.  It is my favorite show these days. i have watched it all of the way through twice.  The dialogue is briliant!

Show is very loosely based on Joan Rivers.  Both came from upper class educated families. Joan went to Barnard and Mrs. Maisel went to Bryn Mawr - both 7 Sister Schools.  Ivy League Schools at that time were men only.

I also think Sophie Lennon is loosely based on Phyllis Diller.

It’s a terrific show, and the whole cast is wonderful. Racheal Brosnahan is a wonder.

I love the show but didn't realize it was loosley based on Joan.  I did love her.  The show I think is pretty funny and the acting is really good.   I don't watch a lot of series but am definately involved in this one!

Shelbelle:   Wow, I did not know that.  I wonder how long she was married to her first husband, all I remember was Edgar.

Love the show.  And loved Joan.  I think that's why I got into it since it was based on her.  The whole cast is wonderful.  The second season started out a lot different from first season and I had my doubts but it turned out great.

Re: Joan Rivers / Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Both Joan and Mrs. Maisel character were well educated. Joan attended Barnard and Mrs. Maisel went to Bryn Mawr - both 7 sister schools.  Girls were not allowed at the Ivy League Schools. Bryn Mawr and Barnard were both tough admits.  They also both come from wealthier families. Joan's dad was a doctor and Mrs. Maisel's is a tenured college professor at an Ivy League University.
