I watched "Hawaii Life" on HGTV today.  This couple said they were looking for a home to buy.  She was a "designer" and he was a "photographer."  I was a little suspicious when they gave their work history.  The realtor showed them three homes--which they found fault with.  I could tell that they just wanted to be on the show and had no intention of buying--couldn't afford to.  Sure enough, they didn't put an offer on any property.  It was obvious that the realtor knew they weren't serious.  Don't they vet these people?  I've seen this happen two other times!

Re: FAKE HOUSEHUNTERS ON HGTV

They script this program long before they acquire people to appear on it.  An occasional deadbeat househunter just makes it more interesting.  The couple very well may have been professional actors.  These shows are strictly entertainment, not reality.  Don't take it so seriously.

It is fake and scripted. I don't understand why anyone watches HGTV.

@fortune

I'm not sure why them givng their work history would be so "suspicious".   They all do that ... The Beachfront Bargain Hunt, the Island Life, or my current favorite ... Lottery Millionnaire.

It's not shown but many times they see more than 3 homes.  A show I'd recently watched showed a happy engaged couple house hunting, and then the outcome at the end said they broke up and the woman was still looking for a home !

These shows aren't authenticated documentaries ... they are for entertainment value .....  and they do very well in the ratings.

I never watch HGTV anymore. I miss the good decorating shows they used to have on.

A really old one I used to enjoy was called Designing for the Sexes. It was an older gentleman designer that listened to both husband & wife's likes & dislikes, because of course they were at odds on how to furnish and decorate. He managed to fuse their wishes and make them both satisfied and happy.

But maybe that was fake too.

I love House Hunters International even if it's fake just to see the beautiful European cities and countryside as well as the homes/apartments and how different they are than here. Well actually once in a blue moon some if you didn't know better could be anywhere USA.

Re: FAKE HOUSEHUNTERS ON HGTV

Agreed.  They used to have a much wider variety of shows, focussing on all different types of design and designers.  Some of them were quite quirky.  Most were interesting.

I liked a lot of them, especially the ones that showed "difficult" interiors being rescued with little money spent and few purchases-- just using what the owner had, and the designer's own ingenuity.

Not sure why HGTV made the decision to drastically reduce the scope of their programming, and present such a "homogenized" line-up.

It seems almost all they have on now are house flippers. I really liked Candice Olson and some of the older shows.

And how about that very handsome Scott McGillivray on Income Property. Even if you didn't like the show you had to like looking at him.

I don't understand why people watch football or basketball either.  Actually I'd rather watch fake and scripted HGTV any day.
