I've read the terms, and honestly I don't see that it's "obvious" and I do think it's wrong to assume to know what Facebook users have or haven't read.Smiley

Every website including QVC has very similar, ridiculously lengthy terms, policies, and we agree to them every day.  (Read the terms for iTunes or eBay, for example, if you really want to be taken aback.)   Have you read all those on every website you use?  Do you continue to use their sites, even so?  Facebook is no exception.

(btw:  I already said in my previous post:  "It's a free platform mainly because businesses (and individuals) use it for commercial purposes.")

The point remains...  if we do not place the information there, they have no information to use.

It's our responsibility to use it wisely and knowledgeably.  No matter which website we use, including this one.

Moonchilde, I see what you mean- it was family I'd have to unfriend -they were putting too much out there. I did block an aunt and cousin from posting on my wall and it just made them upset when they figured out others could and they couldn't.  It was easier to leave since my requests to keep my personal issues private kept getting forgotten. My gaming friends & real life friends were great.

I just can't be the only person on the planet who doesn't want to use Facebook, but for some time now the ONLY way to contact a specific hostt is to go to their Facebook page.  There is no way to send an email directly to the host anymore.  Know this isn't a new policy, just that I am fed up with Facebook controlling everything we do.  Sending an email suggestion to QVC does not work.  If they were getting too many direct emails-----well isn't that just too bad.  Part of the job and just means that lots of people  are watching them.

@patches3,

Facebook isn't the only way to contact the hosts.

At the bottom of every page/screen on QVC.com, you'll see

"Meet our Hosts"

When you select that, you'll be directed to a page with all the hosts listed.

Click on the name or photo of the person you want to contact.

Off to the right, you'll see the icons to contact them via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

But if you'll look next to their photo, for most of them you'll see "My Email."

Click that if you want to send a message.

This thread was started because @Patches2279 was under the false  assumption that Facebook is the only way to contact the hosts, so I wanted to bring this forward with the steps to take for those who aren't interested in using Facebook.

I hope this will be helpful.

But that's true all over the internet, wherever you go, terms of use or not. Every site anyone visits ever mines your details and information. FB is more upfront about it than a lot of sites. In fact, FB gets a bad rap *because* they don't hide. People paint them as evil but seem not to be aware that you are tracked everywhere on the internet from website to website, whether you are told about it or not.

Oh yeh, I get it - that kind of thing can be very tricky indeed. It's a shame that the whole experience was ruined for you :-(

Excellent post, DooB.

There seems to be a recurrent demonizing of FB on QVC forums by those who haven't used it, who have tried it but were never able to set it up properly and those who seem to think that *everyone* talks about the weather all day and it's boring by design. It is what you make it. It's not for everyone. It takes some knowledge and effort. But it's not The Evil Empire.

ETA this is a general comment about all FB threads, not picking on/out any posters in this thread.

Thanks, @Moonchilde!  I appreciate that.Smiley

There's an underlying danger to this notion that Facebook's the problem.  I think it contributes to stifling awareness that everything we do on the internet needs to be done carefully and thoughtfully.

It would make so much more sense for us all to devote our energies to learning about steps we can take and tools we can use to be safer on the internet, protect ourselves from nefarious people, limit tracking by our browsers, our email providers, and by every site we visit.  (Things like using addons/extensions, or using a browser like DuckDuckGo, learning more about cookies/cache, for example.)  Instead, focusing on one particular social media site diverts attention and (in my opinion) results in more people possibly thinking they're safer because they avoid one specific site, and then they may fall prey to other trackers, hackers, and criminals.

Very much so.  I hate the FB me-tailored ads - but I don't want to use Safari to get rid of them. I love Chrome, and Chrome for iPad doesn't have any ad-blockers :-( because...you know...Apple & Google never play nice :-(

But the me-tailored ads follow me from site to site, everywhere, so it's universal, not just FB-related.

I've been online since the early 90s and have always been aware of the importance of guarding as much info as it is possible to guard, while balancing that with living a part of my life, and doing business online - business in the sense of all the websites we use to do just about everything nowadays. Having information possibly used against us online is like having a credit/debit card hacked - it's going to happen at some point no matter what. It's the price of being online at all.

@Moonchilde,  I started using email and online websites in the early 1980s!   It's been around a lot longer than some people realize.Smiley  I haven't tried using Chrome on my iPad recently -- I wasn't a fan of it in the past, and they do tend to be among the worst culprits when it comes to tracking and data-collecting.  I don't have problems with Safari, I like DuckDuckGo as the default search engine, and it helps significantly to delete all cookies and website data regularly (I do it several times a day so the stored info doesn't follow me around).

I like duckduckgo and have had it on the iPad since it first came out. I don't think it's Google's fault that Chrome doesn't work well on i-devices - Apple doesn't want a direct competitor to work well on their devices ;-( But yeh, my Chrome for iPad used to crash all the time, at least it's stopped doing that. I don't use the new Microsoft Win 10 browser either - I'm leery of the whole info-gathering thing by MS. Cortana sounds fun, but you have to enable stuff I don't want enabled, so...no. I don't use Siri either, except to ask her dumb questions to see what she'll say ;-)
