Post order in View All Forum Topics

Please, please, can't you fix it so that when someone posts on a thread, that thead pops to the top with each new reply, like it used to? Doing that kept the most active posts near the top. It really makes it easier to track what's relavant. You can't depend on hearts to do that, because not everyone uses them.

Hi @betteb,

Thank you for your question. I hope I am understanding your question correctly and will try to explain what is available now.

There are two areas of the forums that allow you to see the most recent reply to a topic bumped to the top of the page:

1- Within the VIEW ALL FORUM TOPICS
2- Within each specific forum category (i.e. Beauty, Fashion, etc.)

When you first click on VIEW ALL FORUM TOPICS you will see a page that lists topics in the date order. This page can be changed to the view you are asking for. There is a drop down menu that reads VIEW BY. Under that drop down is the option to view by Topic or Post.

Under each specific forum category all content is listed in the order of the most recent reply (post).

One definite difference from the previous forums is you will see a new list for each reply versus only seeing the topic bumped to the top once with most recent name of the person who replied.

Can you tell me if this is not the experience you are seeing, and if you are requesting something different?

Thank you Keyai @Commmunity_Team. I made that change and I think that fixes it. I will post back if it doesn't. Thanks again Smiley Happy

I'm not OP, but am responding because what I want is similar.  Or the same, not sure what Better means.   See my posts in Suggestions.

Keyai, thanks for your response.   Neither of your suggestions fits the need. When viewing all threads, View by Topics lists each thread by date of creation.  This buries older threads that have new replies.

View by Post lists all posts by creation time.   A thread that is generating many responses is listed over and over and over, burying other threads.

In the old forum, View All Threads listed each thread once, by time of LAST REPLY. That's what we want here.   To the topic options, which are currently By Topic and By Post, add the option By Last Reply.

Please???    I've posted about this several times this week.

Ok, that doesn't work, it does not hold those settings. I have to resort everytime I go to a differnt page and come back.

Can the team set the board to automatically "Float This Topic to the Top" with every post? That is how the old forum worked.

Hi @nomless,

I understand your request. Unfortunately that is not a quick change to make to the new forums. It is a siginificant enhancement to the exisiting forums that we would like to see implemented sometime in 2016.

We will need to review your request with all forum members before making a change that impacts everyone.

Each individual category defaults to showing you the most recent post listed at the top, but I understand you are requesting this experience for view all forum topics.

Re: Post order in View All Forum Topics

[ Edited ]

@betteb - If you make some changes to your Preferences, you'll be able to have the most recent post replies move to the top of each forum. On the first day the changes to the forums were made, I went to My Settings, and started "playing around" with the Preferences. For me, I find it helpful to just start clicking on different options to see how it changes things. Here is how I set up my Preferences:

Display: I kept all of the detaults. (i.e. Linear format, emoticon detault. text size default, date default MM-dd-yyyy, topic list display style default, topic list discussion style default). I deselected/unchecked the option for "Use relative dates (three hours ago)." I did not select/check "Turn on Quick Reply" because I don't use Quick Reply. I then made sure to click the coral/red Save button at the bottom of the page.

Also, I selected/checked the option for "Show folder icons for new posts and hot or read-only topics." This is a feature that will show a tiny symbol/icon to the left of each Thread Title to let you know if you've already read the thread, if new content to the thread has been added since you last read the thread, and/or if you've replied to a thread. The symbol/icon will either be something that looks like a tiny "speech bubble" or an arrow. If the "speech bubble" is white, it indicates you have read/viewed the thread. If the "speech bubble" is gray, it indicates you haven't read/viewed the thread OR new content has been added since you last viewed/read the thread. If the symbol is an arrow, it indicates you've posted a reply to the thread. I'm not sure if everyone knows of this feature, but I find it really helpful to see at a glance what threads I've already read or threads that have new content since I last read. (Edited to add:  If this feature was already a default under Preferences, and if everyone is already seeing the symbols/icons next to thread titles, please excuse!  I can no longer remember what options were defaults or not!  Smiley Tongue ).

You might also see a tiny "lock" symbol/icon next to a thread title, which means a moderator has "locked" the thread, and has blocked additional replies OR the moderator has removed the thread, yet left the thread Title.

General: I kept the default for "Mark posts as read" (which is, "When I read them." ). I left "Auto-mark period" option blank.  I selected/checked the option for "Sort topics by time of most recent posts."  I don't think that was a default, so be sure to check it, as I think this is what makes most recent replies move to the top of each forum. I then made sure to click the coral/red Save button at the bottom of the page.

Linear Layout: I kept the default for "Linear Format: Sorting order within topics" (which is, "oldest first"). For "Topics per page" and "Posts per topic," I have mine set at 30 and 50. I selected/checked the option for "Jump to first unread post in a topic." I don't think this was a default, either, but it may have been (I can't remember!). I then made sure to click the coral/red Save button at the bottom of the page.

Topic Layout: I kept the default for "List by Topics: Sorting order within topics" (which is "Newest first"). For "Posts per page" and "Posts per topic," I have 50 for both. I then made sure to click the coral/red Save button at the bottom of the page.

Home Page: I selected/checked "Show the Latest Topics component." I don't have the "Show the Latest Posts component" selected/checked because I don't think I saw a difference, but I think I might go back and revisit that. Initially, I think I had that option selected/checked instead of the "Topics component," but for some reason I wasn't seeing a difference between the two options. Again, I'm going to go back and "play around" with that to see if I notice a difference this time.

Privacy: I kept the defaults.

Hearts: I kept the defaults.

Hope this might help. Again, these are just my Preferences - you may decide you like things set differently, but be sure the option for "Sort topics by time of most recent post" is selected/checked. I think it's what makes the most recent replies move to the top of each forum. Good luck!

Re: Post order in View All Forum Topic

Appreciate your suggestions and detailed instructions, Celery.  But it requires going to each category in order to see the new posts.   That's too time consuming and tedious, especially after years on the old system which enabled us to see all new posts across categories simply by choosing the View All Threads option.  I don't have the patience to take the time to go to each category.   But I recognize that's just me.

My solution will have to be floating the three or four threads I really care about and ignoring the rest.   I'm sad about that, as it was fun to browse all active threads, but it's just too cumbersome to do so now.  Oh, well, NBD.
