Re: Moderators - Suggest a Faith Forum

I will leave how this is handled up to QVC.  I do think if they do this many people will leave.  The simple fact is, QVC is shopped by many Christians because it is a wholesome and cleancut place to shop.  Many, if not most of their hosts, profess to believe in God.   This hypocrisy thing you talk about works both ways.

I have always had a hard time understanding people who want to read something they hate and then report it....no matter what the subject is.  It's a free world.  We are all confronted every day with things we don't like and people we wish to avoid.  Avoid them.  It's so easy.  I am not imtimidated one iota by anyone who talks about Atheism, Islam, Buddists, etc.  If they want to talk....let them.  I don't have to read it!  Many people have left already.  QVC forums will turn into a ghost town, I fear, if anymore leave.  Do we all really want that?

Re: Moderators - Suggest a Faith Forum

There's nothing wrong with submitting suggestions.  I don't see this idea as something the Q will embrace, however.  For one thing, if they keep adding more sub-forums we'll end up with an unwieldy list.  Also, faith is such a complex issue and it's generally something that becomes woven into discussions about other things rather than being specific threads about the subject of faith.   So many questions arise, a couple of examples:  What would they categorize as "faith?"  If they added a "faith" forum, would they then have to remove every post within every thread that might touch on "faith?"

I agree it's confusing, the way some threads/posts are removed and others allowed to stand or are moved to the "Among Friends" forum.  Moderating a forum isn't easy, and decisions have to be subjective because so much is open to interpretation and a team of human beings makes the calls.

Interesting conversation, though.

Re: Moderators - Suggest a Faith Forum

Sidebar:  The Standards for Participation don't mention religion/faith but do specifically mention politics:  "Do not initiate or engage in political discussions or discussions of a controversial nature."  The more informal, explanatory Community Guidelines do say these particular topics have a tendency to fall into the "controversial" category:  "current events, politics, religious beliefs, and unkind comments about hosts, vendors, models, or employees."

Just my observation, but it seems to me they moderated much more strictly in the first weeks following the launch of the new forum and now they're a bit more lenient.  Again, moderating isn't an exact science and I appreciate the way the team is trying to work out this balancing act.

I'm just about ROFL right now at this comment in red.  Are you suggesting that non-Christians or, heaven forbid, atheists or agnostics do not desire "wholesome and cleancut" places to shop?

I haven't seen the proselytizing but that is because I spend no more than 5-10 minutes a day here due to the annoying physical set-up.  I can tell you that I would not like to open a non-religious thread to find someone quoting Scripture.  It is off-putting.  I therefore support a Religion Forum for that purpose where those so inclined can read and participate.

1) And if they continue as they have for the past couple of weeks, "many" who do not wish to be preached to will also leave. But the way it looks now, QVC has no problem with that and would encourage it. As I have said - their prerogative, but some of us would appreciate at the least knowing that up front. And as far as the 'ghost town' aspect - I'm assuming you'd be okay if all the non-believers left.

2) "God" does not encompass only Christianity.  Many millions of people across the globe who are not Christian believe in a Supreme Being. Just because their God doesn't fit into the confines of certain Christian denominations doesn't make their God or their belief in him invalid - and it doesn't make the Christian God "the" only valid concept of a Supreme Being. Islam states "there is no God but Allah." Does that then make Islam invalid and its followers not believe in God? Jews also believe in God, but not the divinity of Christ. So do Hindus believe in one God, although they express it in a way Westerners find difficult to grasp.

Some Christians (notice the word SOME) consider anything outside their narrow definitions as wrong, invalid, ignorant, heathenish, etc. The majority have their beliefs but do not seek to change the world or preach to those who have no interest.

3) As far as ignoring and reporting things disliked (I have never used the word 'hate' nor do I feel it about this issue) - so then no matter what is said, on any topic or directed at whomever, it should just "not be read" and it should never be reported? Or does that only work as "people should just ignore and not report whay I approve of, but I'm free to disparage and report what they approve of."

@jubilant, the great majority of Christians on these forums do not do or say what many of us find annoying, insulting and intrusive. Simple *discussion* or expression of faith/belief is not my particular issue and never has been. It is when particular posters of a particular small group of denominations take the opportunity, in threads that have little or nothing to do with Christianity per se, to sermonize, quote scriptute extensively, and proselytize their beliefs as the "only true" belief. They believe in doing this, but that does not make it acceptable in polite society, anywhere.

I hope this post, if read, will also address some of the comments of others I don't have time to address, as I'm going out shortly for much of the day.

In short - if either QVC or more mainstream Christians discouraged the few in their evangelical endeavors where inappropriate, I don't feel there would be a problem - at least, for me.

Hi again, Moonchilde!  I hope you are having a lovely day.

I'm glad to see that, for the most part anyway, this has continued to be a civil conversation.  Smiley Happy

Hi, @chickenbutt :-)

I have had a great, if tiring, day. It's still pushing 90 here, but I went to an annual street fair I love, because since I'm moving within 6 months, it was my last one. I needed the fun. Had second cataract surgery last week and unexpected stress ensued. Back to work tomorrow :-( Also squeezed in a chair massage & dirt cheap facial as well as a garlic shrimp meal. So, ready to face manana.

As for the dialogue - I too am pleased that there has been able to BE one, snarkasauruses aside :-)

If I'm lucky later I'll try to view the blood moon. Hope you're enjoying your Sunday.

Re: Moderators - Suggest a Faith Forum

Yeah, still upper 80s where i am.  With my luck it will continue to be cloudy this evening and I'll miss the moon thing. There are still four hours plus so maybe it will clear up.

Aww, glad you got to go the street fair one last time before moving away from it.  I cannot do outside things anymore because, since this auto-immune thing has gotten much worse, I get splotchy, then red, then purple, then I start to fall out - all within a few minutes and it only has to be near 70 or higher.    No biggie.  I never liked the heat anyway.  Smiley Happy

Looking forward to (hoping for) a nice, cold winter - my fav.

Well, this has been about as close as you can get, here, to having a grown up conversation.  Sooner or later the destructive types always show up.

I hear you about heat. Sorry you are having to deal with autoimmune issues on top of that. I'm fair-skinned and light-eyed, and heat has always affected me badly, even in my 20s. Fortunately it will be cooler where I'm going, if not cold. No snow, but not so much 85+ either. I'll take it!

...........I wasn't suggesting that at all.  I know a lot of clean cut people and they are not all Christians. Sorry it sounded that way to you.  It was not my intent.
