I think everyone is trying to get away from connecting religion to holidays when selling. It used to bother me when Valerie would refer to the Thanksgiving table and call it the harvest table but I guess I have mellowed and realized I didn't care what others called things because I know what they are to me.  My last few years of working in an elementary school kindergarten classroom the Easter Bunny was changed to the Spring Bunny! Now that just seemed wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In much of rural America, there is a Thanksgiving table set once a year. But we share a harvest table from late August on through Thanksgiving. We prepare and serve the bounty of our farms, gardens and farmer's markets on a daily or weekly basis for family and friends, gather around a well set and decorated table, and enjoy, appreciate and give thanks for the harvest that will sustain us through the winter.

I personally want more 'harvest' themed decor, dishes linens etc. because I get more use from them than something geared strictly to Thanksgiving. I think they are encouraging sales by relating that those things for harvest can be used for months and therefore worth our attention and money, more so than just things purchased for one day.

Re: Harvest/Holiday

[ Edited ]

The term "Harvest" makes me think of horror stories/movies, not a holiday.

ETA: It sounds like something Stephen King would write about.

@ Montana That's so funny.  I've thought the same thing.  We've always referred to it as Fall or Autumn decor in my family.  "Harvest" does conjure up images of a midnight ceremony in the corn field where a sacrifice is made.

One of my favorite hymns since childhood:

"Come ye thankful people, come,

raise the song of harvest home..."

i love the meaning and message of the harvest, to be thankful, share, and rejoice. So bring on the harvest decor!!!!
