I think this would be an interesting purchase and conversation piece, but if I were a buyer at QVC, I'd be concerned about potential returns.  I bet there are lots of people out there who would buy it, use it, then try to get their money back once they found out what they wanted to know.

@wildcat fan

I didn't think of that. The return policy would have be similar to food purchases...? How can someone eat an entire ham and call for a refund? hmmm

I guess the food returns aren't too bad or else they wouldn't keep having food shows, but I have read about times when QVC refunded food purchases.  I also remember enjoying a host's Halloween show several years ago. They featured costumes unlike anything I'd seen locally, but I read there were lots of costume returns after the holiday. I could never do something like that, but I think there are lots of people who would.  It's a shame.

National Geographic also offers a DNA kit, but it's around $200.00.  I saw a program about how they collected the DNA, it was a very thorough project which took them several years to complete.  They traveled to extremely remote villages around the globe and took samples of the eldest people in the village to get the "truest" DNA possible.

If I had mine done, I'd do the Nat Geo one, as theirs seem the most thorough.

I wonder how the others got their baseline DNA samples....

I got one for my dog on Amazon.  I believe it was $65-70.

we talking about this last night at dinner.

My daughter wants to do this, but I think there are better things to do with $100

Mine would be just AngloSaxon etc  rather boring

Spouse  Eastern European

That's what we thought, but SURPRISE! We had researched our ancestry way, way back through Ancestry(dot)com and other sites also. However, you never know what your genetic makeup is until you test it. There might have been adoptions along the way, could have been illegitimate children (or "half" siblings), and way back when there were slaves, it was not uncommon for men to have intimate relationships with female slaves. There were also many instances of people who fostered children who lost their parents, and the children just took on the name of the foster parents.

We thought we were just European also. I mean, I come from a long line of redheads who have extremely fair skin and freckles. Little did I know that I was 5% ethnic minority...and yes, that is considered significant. If you read the ancestry columns, some people are shocked that they are .3% to 2% ethnic minority. We wanted to know what our ethnicity is, and we found out...and I am very proud of it.

Incidentally, the other thread is under Community Chat.

I don't think that would be a problem, because it takes 8-10 weeks to get your DNA results. QVC only accepts returns up to 30 days as far as I know.

"How about working a deal with Ancestry"

Good idea but I do not think the partnership will work.  Ancestry is a worldwide company completely owned by the LDS w/no outside "deals."

QVC will probably do better making deals w/the other DNA companies out there.

Good point. There are a few other major companies out there.

@Yardlie,

The Q sometimes has "extended return" policies. I've bought an item that had a six-month return option on it.

Wow...good to know! I guess they would have to decide on specific guidelines if they decided to do a DNA kit.

Personally, I don't know how anyone could decide they wanted a refund because they didn't "like" the results. How can you not like who you are? Isn't that the purpose of the test? You never know though. I found my results fascinating.
