@beach-mom. My son, who was just a toddler when we had horses, didn't want anything to do with them. Thats why we eventually sold them and quit the horse business.
I've had back problems ever since I took a dive off a horse as he jumped a big log on a trail, while riding an English saddle. I was in college at the time.

Find horses magnificent but simply don't enjoy horse racing nor all the hoopla that accompanies the Kentucky Derby.

Anyway we all stopped to watch the race on TV because it was a local horse & owner at the time. Smarty Jones won!....and he went on to win the Preakness.
He lost the Belmont Stakes. Lost the Triple Crown by a head!
Who could forget Smarty Jones? Not me.
His owner was Roy Chapman. A "C" in the car dealership of "C" and "C" on Easton Road. I went to school with one of the other "C".
We cheered when Smarty Jones won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. And were so sad when he came in second at Belmont.
And felt bad when we read about Smarty Jones having ankle troubles and so the Chapman's retired Smarty Jones..
Smarty Jones is still alive and living on a farm in Pennsylvania.

@Kachina624 Count me in the group that doesn't know a ton about horses. I think they are beautiful, majestic animals. I have a healthy respect for them. In upper Michigan on Mackinac Island, you can only get around by horse, on foot, or by bike! Not motorized cars or trucks (except the ambulance). When I was there this summer, my favorites were a pair named Jake and Elwood. I stood next to them, and boy, were they big! Sweet but large!

WOW! 23 horses that is quite a group. I thought they usually have between 15 (2020- 19 (2025) horses.
Saw this - Every horse running in Kentucky Derby 2025 was a descendant of Secretariat. Wonder how many this year.

The Puma has been scratched. I actually liked that horse but really didn't like a guy who just bought into him at the last minute so now I'm not terribly sad about this outcome.

It's fun to place a bet and fun when you win but that's about it. Oh, I like seeing all the hats the women are wearing. Watching on Peacock.

That was one thing I liked about the gift shop at Churchill Downs, they had hats for sale. They had hats for men and women. So in case you didn't have one. You could buy one to get into the spirit of the occasion.

@Kachina624 - I'm so sorry about your back problems.
It's not easy when children don't have the same interest as their parents. As the only son, DH was "expected" to take over the dairy farm. When he was a teenager he told his dad he didn't want to do that. Like you and your DH, his dad started to downsize and eventually sold all of the cattle and milking equipment.
I had never asked him how his dad took it until after his dad was gone. DH said his dad was very supportive.
We went through similar things with our children too. Sometimes it's hard to see their disinterest in what you're so passionate about, especially when they were so interested when they were young.
But they have to find their ways. It doesn't mean we have to give up our passions! ![]()
