I highly, highly, highly recommend going to your nearest Fleet Feet and letting them fit you for a shoe. They physically measure and have machines that measure your gait, pronation, etc. Then they will select several shoes that would be good choices for you based on your fitting. And if you don't like them after wearing them several times? You can take them back for a full refund. They're not cheap, but you will be so happy you took this route. For me, Saucony shoes are the best, but no one else has mentioned them, so that kind of proves my point. What brand of shoe (and model within the brand) that is good for one person won't fit another person correctly. And most brands have at least one black option.
You are so right about what works for some, may not work for others. I took a chance on Hoka's and I'm really please with their comfort and support. My first pair of tennis shoes after I graduated from nursing school were ASICS. They were great! I tried them again about 3 years ago and was disappointed, BUT I was 26 when I bought that 1st pair, and now at 51, I need more cushion and comfort.

My favorite sneakers are Brooks Adrenaline. They have a stabilizer bar on the side of the shoe that keeps your foot from turning. I remove the footbed and add the Vionic footbed for extra stability. My physical therapist has started to do the same.

I have no idea what type of shoes I should be wearing----went to a foot dr and he told me Hoka --he-- liked that brand---but they were not comfortable on and the $150+ was a shocker. I settled for Saucony--was ok, but not really---so now what?? Would rather go in person and not waste time with trying to shop online, then having to send it back--guess it's a trip to the mall --got my feet scanned at one shoe shop--maybe go back there. Am just a walker--nothing athletic so don't need fancy shoes, just comfy ones.
