I have Greek feet, (see below) and this post will only apply to people with Greek feet...(or maybe Celtic feet).
Slipper, shoe, or boot, it's always size 9&1/2 for me. So why is my summer footwear always too big?
I trace around the toes and heel of each foot, measure the length, check the size chart, and what they send me is always too big. Big enough that it's a tripping hazard.
Then it's returns/exchanges, sorry sold out, too bad blah blah p-i-t-a.
Today I finally realized that when measuring my foot for a flip flop or slide type shoe, I should ignore the extra length of the 2nd toe. For open toes I go down 3/8" .
Duh!! I currently have a pair of cute slides I have to exchange.

I have Egyptian toes and I always go down a size when i buy open-toe sandals.

Me too! 8 in open shoes, like flip flops or sandals, and 8 1/2 in closed toe.

It's just in recent years, where I can't go try things on, and have to resort to tracing and measuring. It never occurred to me the open toe style shoe meant a person's foot type doesn't matter.
Guess I'm an 8 in summer and a 9&1/2 in cold weather. Lol!

I also have a Greek foot. For open sandals, I go down a half size to 1 size depending, because I don't like the extra shoe sticking out beyond my toes. My foot fits perfectly on the insole. I make sure my second toe does not stick out over the edge of insole when I'm walking. That would be a no, no, for me.
In closed shoes, I like room in the front of my shoes that I don't need for sandals.

I've known about different foot types for years, and this is why I get so vexed when they don't give a good still shot of the bottom of the footwear they're selling.
By now I can tell if a shoe is likely to be cramped or comfortable by looking at the shape of the toe area. (A photo of the bottom taken at an angle doesn't help, QVC.)

I always thought I had Roman toes but, looking at those feet, I see that I have Greek toes. This "revelation" comes just in time since I started shopping online for sandals. I couldn't decide whether to order an 8 or 8 1/2. Now I know.
P.S. I ordered and received my sandals. I went with the size 8 and they are perfect. Thank you!

I wear a 7.5 in everything. I can't wear an 8; can't wear a 7. Ever.

@Sooner same here. I'm always a 6M regardless of the type of footwear. (And I have Egyptian feet. Does that mean I walk like an Egyptian? 😄)
