Difference between calf and pebbled leather?

The Dooney site is hung up with everyone shopping and I can't go in and look it up as I try to do when I have questions. I normally would think that calf would be a softer leather and pebbled more the pebbled tougher leather, but looking at them up close the calf does seem to have a substantial grain, maybe not pebbled, but not as soft as I would have thought. Any insight. For some reason I can't even manage to get the right words in for google to give me the answer tonight.
