Colette bag -- comfortable with a coat?

I love the look of the colette bag but I can't seem to find it in a store to check it out. What I need to know is if it will be comfortable over a coat -- and if a 14-inch size laptop case would fit in it. I was also looking at the DB shadow large tote -- but I'm nervous that if I use it a lot it will stain (it's not coated). Any thoughts? Thanks!
