Clarks M vs. W

I generally wear an 8 1/2 M, the shoes I could like are Clarks Fisherman and they are in 8 or 8 1/2 wide.  Which would I be the smartest to try?  I do have a bit of a wide foot, but lately I've been wearing mediums.  Is there much difference in the length for M to W shoes. Should I go down a size to 8 wide?  Help would be appreciated.

It depends on the style shoe & what about your foot makes it a Wide.

 

In a closed toe, the toe box is generous, I would never wear a Wide or have to size up.

I have bad toes on one foot.
