Can butter be substituted for margarine? I have no margarine in the house.

I would TOTALLY use butter!! It will be better and, because the consistency is about the same, it will come out right.
I don't use margarine either. It doesn't taste good and it's about one molecule from being polyester, IMO.
Use the butter.

I was just about to post something similar. We're a butter only household - Kirkland Organic (from Costco), for baking/cooking and Kerry Gold for the table. It's expensive, but it's awesome. I thought that margarine was one molecule away from plastic?

Not a sweet, but my favorite After-Thanksgiving-Turkey-Soup from Taste of Home. Not low calorie, but what the heck, I only roast turkey once a year. ![]()

I use butter to.

Or... I wonder if you could use coconut oil instead of butter. I guess it might totally change the taste, though, huh?

I wouldn't do that.

ITA. Use butter. I buy Kerry Gold Butter. I also buy it fresh from a local farmer when we can get it. I had to talk the Wal-Mart Mgr. into keeping the Kerry Gold in stock after I bought it there. First I was told it was not selling. I told him the reason why you think it's not selling is because you have not had any in stock to sell. Took almost 6 months but now they still stock it. I will keep after them if they try to stop stocking it. No place else in town has it. It's basically 2 sticks of butter & almost $4 per pkg. I buy a lot of it & cut in half & freeze using my Foodsaver.

I live outside Washington, D.C., and we have Kerry Gold butter readily available in grocery stores and at Costco. Tried it once, didn't like the consistency enough or find enough difference in flavor to keep buying it. Do buy the Costo butter and freeze it.
Margarine would never be allowed in the home I grew up in , nor in my own home. Those transfats are a definite no-no, whether for baking purposes or for flavoring food.
