Re: Split Pea Soup Recipe?

[ Edited ]

I make Split Pea soup once a week. LOVE, LOVE LOVE IT !

I don't measure anything but throw it all into a slow cooker.

1-2 ham steaks (Hatfield).........about 1/2 package of frozen diced onions

1 package of dried peas (order them from Walmart 6 at a time there own brand )

Good amount of garlic.......  1-2 stalks of diced celery.......Pepper....A couple of Bay Leaves

About 6 cups of Better than Boullion fill to top of slow cooker.

And about 1/4 of julienned carrots from package.

Turn it up to high and within 4-5 hours SOUP

Sometimes I use deli ham ( about 1/2 lb ) and whether  that or Hatfield give it a rough chop so it disperse through the soup and it can get eaten rather than big chunks.

@denisemb  I am not the best cook by a mile but when you go to cook your soup a bay leaf or two would really enrich the flavor of your soup. It's one of those huh, that really makes a differnce ingredients.

Hey, I'm not the best cook by 2 miles. but never understood the value of bay leaves.  Since I have a bunch of them from Penzeys. I'll be sure to add a couple!  Thamks

For something different add some curry powder, cumin and coriander for chili flavor.  For a middle eastern blend like Dukkah or Za'atar!  You could sprinkle either on top of the soup on top and see if you like it.

Ina Garten often adds some vinegar (a tablespoon or two) or lemon juice to things to brighten them up.  Maybe put some good tangy yogurt on top when you serve the soup?

I'm making Ina Gartens' Parker's Split Pea Soup next week; no ham in it.  It isn't a smooth soup either (both are what I grew up with:ham and smooth soup). I'll let you know my verdict.Smiley Happy

@denisemb   Alessi has an excellent split pea soup.  It comes in a bag and it is soooooooooo  good.  You could add your ham to it.
