A very long time ago, while traveling in the South, we ate at a hotel that made the most delicious recipe with tomatoes and cinnamon.  It was a side dish, not a sauce.  I’ve tried to find it, but most only have basil as in scalloped tomatoes. Does anyone know what I am talking about? We were reminiscing and this dish came up in conversation.  Any help appreciated!  Thanks!

I just did a Google search and found several recipes of tomatoes w/ cinnamon. Give it a look.

@2zbeach  I found the following from the Kitchn website  after a quick search:

                            Cinnamon Spiced Tomatoes

1 14 oz. can diced tomotoes, drained

1 tsp. olive oil

1/4 of a medium sized jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced

1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp. sugar

salt & pepper

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.  Add the jalapeno and a pinch of salt and saute for 1 to 2 minutes.  

Add cinnamon and cook for thirty seconds.  Remove from heat.  Add this mixture to the drained tomatoes, then add the sugar.  Stir to combine and add salt and pepper to taste.

Search "breaded tomatoes the old fashioned way".  There are some recipes there that you could start with and modify to your taste.  

Also Sweet Tea and Cornbread: Mama's Old Fashioned Breaded Tomatoes.  One of the comments on this one refere to Virginia and another Portsmouth VA.  

The technique looks good, spice it as you will on the above recipes. 

I'll bet what you had was basically bread, tomatoes, salt, sugar, butter and spices in a casserole.  LOTS of old recipes out there for this.  I have never had it but I may give it a try!

Breaded tomatoes are a favorite; my family always used day old biscuits and lots of sugar.

Searching tomato pudding did the trick.  I’ll just modify it a bit.  Thanks to all who offered to help! Off to the farmer’s market tomorrow! Yum!
