I make it by hand and by bag but don't have a really good cole slaw dressing recipe. I prefer to make my salad dressing myself to avoid all the junk in them. Any recipes would be appreciated.

thx!!!

I'm a knife user too, & like my cole slaw in thin shreds - not chopped.

Irish Rosebud, mine sounds kind of like yours, & thanks for the tip about salting the cabbage, then rinsing it well. I'd never heard that, but will definitely have to try it!

sueP, I enjoyed reading your post. It's obvious that you enjoy cooking.

Good thread, Beebee!

Just made some last week for the big game and used a knife, but I have to be honest. I did ask myself when I was done why I didn't use my grater box or my mandoline. Thanks for the salt tip IR

I make mine in my Ninja Pulse.

Cut cabbage into large chunks, add carrot chunks, cover with water.

Pulse until the consistency you like.

Drain well.

I prefer two methods. One is using a knife to cut the cabbage to the desired size - I especially like this for fish tacos. My other method is using an old, old wooden bowl and chopper that belonged to the mother of a family friend. I remember Aunt Violet making cole slaw in her mother's bowl with the chopper and it was always so good. It works well and also brings back nice memories of a dear friend.

You're very welcome, Sabatini and RocketMom.

Does anyone have a good vinegar-based dressing recipe for cole slaw? I love Marzetti's Cole Slaw Dressing but every now and then I think I'd like to switch it up with something a bit different.

Thank you!

Where I come from (middle GA) and where I live now (South GA) slaw is a given in all of the catfish houses, (my ex Vermonter husband said the we built catfish houses in the most absolute remote places on earth) and I do not eat catfish.......BUT.........slaw was not chopped, or had carrots, or vinegar, and was very fine cabbage, with only salt, pepper, and mayo (NOT salad dressing) , or some with a sprinkling of sugar.......{#emotions_dlg.crying} or a spoonful of sweetened condensed milk..........{#emotions_dlg.crying} I can remember that in the "old days", you would put it in a blender, and many a cook ruined it by trying to push the cabbage down with a wooden spoon (what we all had back in the day, and Only a wooden spoon), and then the spoon was in the slaw......so to the store you went.........Wink You would use the blender, and poured in in a colander, and then mixed with mayo, salt, pepper........That was it.........KFC coleslaw, was like this at one time, until today, that many Southerners call Yankee cole slaw.......I guess we all have our own version, and today, I make the fine cole slaw, with mayo, salt, pepper, and a bit of either dried or fresh basil ONLY.....That does make for an interesting blend with the cabbage/mayo blend...........Cool

In my opinion Kentucky Fried Chicken makes a good cole slaw and I often purchase it there instead of going through the hastle of making it from scratch.

I love cole slaw and would eat it every day!

I used to slice the cabbage by hand with a bread knife - my choice. However, right hand surgery left me with CRPS, a permanently disabling syndrome, so my right hand is not worth much any more. I've now happily embraced my Cuisinart to shread the cabbage and am pleased with the results.
