Making vanilla extract ?

I was wanting to make some vanilla extract.

Does anyone out there have a good recipe for one one??? I'm so tired of buying..and spending so much money on it.. I have a bottle of vodka and spiced rum...I was wondering if you would put the whole vanilla bean in it or if you scraped the inside of the bean or what ??

I have looked on line and am just not sure what recipe to use.. not to mention Id love to give them out for Christmas gifts...so I want it to turn out...and be good...
