Just want to encourage you all to make a loaf. I went to Steves artisanbread YT chanel and just want to share how easy, fun and delicious this bread making can be. it is super simple to make his basic no knead recipe with over night rise. Now go make a loaf and come back and tell me all about it!

Re: Making bread and loving it

Thanks for the information.

I have bread baking on my list of things to do this winter, since I can't garden.

Re: Making bread and loving it

I am going to try this recipe when I figure out what I can cook it in. My dutch oven has a plastic top so I cant use it on that high heat in oven.

Re: Making bread and loving it

i make my own bread all the time.  i love the smell of yeast bread when it is baking.

i have made the noknead bread and it is  really good.  for recipes just check on line and also check at your local library for books on bread making

you don't really need a lid for your dutch oven.  just get a foil pit plate to fit it or cover with  foil.

i got a really old club dutch oven at the thrift store and i use it all time.

i also like to fry pieces of bread dough and then serve with honey butter and cheese for a good meal

Re: Making bread and loving it

Hi ladies, I have a funny tid bit about my day of "trying" LOL to bake bread.  I felt like I love lucy.  A few years back I purchased a bread baking machine.  I wanted so hard to have a fresh baked loaf of bread on the table for supper that night.  I put all of the ingredients in the machine and waited.  I left the room to do other things.  Now the house had a delightful aroma of fresh baked bread.  The table was set for my husband and son and all that was left to do was wait for the bread. I waited and waited and decided maybe I had better add more yeast.  Yep you guessed it the bread had a bubble top as big as a balloon.  The center was almost hollow.  My husband said that was my I love lucy moment and I agree.  I gave away the bread machine and never tried again.  I want to do it but I'm "afraid" of the outcome.  hahaha Maybe I should try again.

Re: Making bread and loving it

i think that you should try again but not with the bread machine.  dough takes very little yeast.  and it is all in the feel of the dough.  if that makes any sense.

@shortbreadloveryou are so right about the feel of the dough or as my grandmother would say,"you have to have a knack for the dough". I used to bake Artisan type breads and sell them at the local Farmers Market, one loaf isn't a lot of work, but try baking 25 loaves in one day for market the next day.

that is a lot of bread to make.  did you knead it by hand?

Re: Making bread and loving it

i picked up a huge marble slab at the local thrift store and it is so nice to knead bread dough on.  i used to do in the stand mixer but this works just as well.

the marble slab was a real find because it is 18"18" and not a crack in it.  i called a few places that sell marble and a pice this size would be over $100.00
