Help needed with poached eggs

DH fancied some poached eggs. I used to have a poaching pan but I think it got lost when we moved. I saw on tv someone showing us how to poach in water. He gave lots of tips but I cannot remember them. When I tried the whites were all stringy. Does anyone have any tips for poaching eggs?
