Can anyone help with a recipe that I've lost? My mom-in-law used a meaty ham bone, navy beans, barley, sauerkraut & cubed potatoes to make a delicious stew-like dish. She called it Klotchke, or some similar name. She was a terrific Slovenian cook. My own mom made a similar dish using just the ham bone & beans. We ate it with homemade cornbread.

Oops.....hubby corrected me. Says his mom used to call the dish "Yatzmin".

I found a recipe called Jota that sounds similar. Is this it? You can search Solvenian recipes to find other recipes.
Jota (pron. Yotta) - Bean and sauerkraut soup
The kind of soup that does to humans what those local wood-fired stoves do in the Slovenian winter: provides a glowing warmth and a feeling of lazy well-being. The best sauerkraut (kisla zelje) can be bought on stalls in the market in Ljubljana... but bottled will do (Polish is very good).
Serves 6
Preparation
Cook the potatoes in boiling water until they are done, at which point strain them... but keep the water! At the same time, drain and rinse the beans, then cook on boiling water for 20-30 minutes, or until soft. Drain the beans... but keep the water! In a large soup saucepan, gently fry the onions and porky-worky in the lard until the onions are soft and translucent. Stir in the flour and cook for a further 5 minutes. Slowly add about 0.5l water, stirring constantly so that you get a nice lump-less consistency. Add the beans, potatoes and sauerkraut, plus the water they were cooked in, followed by the bay leaf and garlic. Salt to taste (but go careful: the soup will become saltier while cooking). Bring to the boil and simmer - stirring often - for 30-40 minutes, or until the soup becomes pleasantly thick.

Hmm...seems similar to MIL's dish. I'll try it -- thanks! And thanks for the link.

This recipe made me smile. My MIL used to make this dish very, very often.
When we got married, I had to promise my husband that I would never make or serve this soup. My husband calls it slop soup and the thought of it gives him nightmares.
I have kept my promise and have never made or served it to him. The rest of his family loves it.
Happy eating!

Nightowlz,
This recipe sounds great, but the Preparation calls for flour but doesn't say how much. Do you know? I look forward to trying this. I have a nice bone from our Christmas ham that I've been looking forward to using to make bean soup. Thanks!
