Well if Mima didn't tackle making cannoli, maybe this aging German_Irish woman shouldn't either! LOL! Like I said, we are not too far from The Hill in St. Louis-I probably will just satisfy my occasional crave there and it will be much easier on my waistline, too!
I'm sorry your temps are so low there but guess it's a good time to turn on the oven! You could bake a batch of hearts for Valentines, a batch of shamrocks for St. Paddy's Day, and some Easter Eggs for Easter. At Christmas I usually bake cutouts long before the holiday and freeze them. When the kids were younger and driving me nuts during the hub-bub of the holidays, I would pull them out of the freezer, make a huge batch of icing and let them decorate. I cleaned up colored sugar and sprinkles for days and my cookies were not picture perfect but it kept them busy and the laughter and giggles were worth the clean up. Let us know what icing recipe worked best for you!

Hi!!
I tried the allrecipes icing recipe...mainly because I was out of eggs and it was....SURPRISE...ANOTHER BLIZZARD OUT! They came out pretty good! The icing recipe was really thick as directed...I added more karo...and then more...and then a shot of more milk. The consistency was pretty good then. I added deep red coloring. The icing was so shiny and pretty! Some white and red sprinkles then on top.
They set fairly well...a teeny bit tacky but not so much that I couldn't stack them. 10x better than any other sugar cookie icing I have used in the past. I would like to try all the icings listed to see which really works the best. I have never seen meringue powder tho...will have to search for that one.
The biggest problem is...who is going to EAT THESE?? Since the church meeting is cancelled...I have a LOT of cookies here! I can feel the lbs. a 'coming....since I can't seem to stop being the taste tester here!! I work in a small office...me and another guy...my DH is on winter break (teacher). Oh dear. I'm doomed. No will power here!

Oh...I did make it to Aldi's! I got the last 3 boxes of potstickers they had. Only pork...but that's okay. I can't believe how inexpensive they are compare to the Q stickers! $1.99 a box?? Hope they taste good!
I can't wait to try them....I mentioned elsewhere...I may just make another pot of soup with these temps. It is STILL -8 outside. Not counting wind chill either! The sun is shining brightly...and MINUS 8 degrees! Sounds like soup weather again!
I didn't buy anything else at Aldi's...I guess I was a little 'unsure' of all the unknown brands!
They don't take credit cards...which is a big UH OH for me since I charge everything! Luckily, I was able to scrape the bottom of my purse for coins to finish the purchase! LOL

Wish I could help you with your dilemma re; those cookies! I would be in the same situation and since I no longer work out of the house, I have greatly curtailed my baking because I don't need to be alone with it!
I still have not made it to Aldi's but my daughter said ours had plenty. Was going to go today but St. Louis got it's first real snow today and the totals so far is anywhere from 3 inches to almost 11 since last night and it is still snowing. Then we are to get artic temps so doubt I will get out for a couple of days. DH had to fly north this morning but he is used to this type of weather.
When I purchased the potstickers at Aldi's, I only bought one box because I wanted to taste them before committing myself to a lot. I also didn't realize they were a seasonal item. I loved them, and when I went back to the store, they were sold out. I'm sorry you didn't realize Aldi's was cash or debit card only. Don't be afraid to try things you like; you may find you like the Aldi's version better. I love their donut blend coffee, I buy eggs there and sometimes butter. I purchase most of our vegetables there and often fruit. We love the 12 grain bread and the naan is wonderful. I buy cheeses (block style) and wedges of parm and asiago. Their take and bake pizzas are excellent. DH was a honeybake ham enthusiast but when I bought the spiral cut ham from Aldi's and he smoked it in the smoker, he thought it was the best! They only carry the hams 3 times a year-Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. After these holidays, Aldi's will discount the price even more so I always get one for the freezer. We use their zip top freezer bags and garbage bags, paper plates, I buy seasonal paper towels there, and we are always game for specialty items. I have purchased grapeseed oil, capers, flavored olive oils, all types of specialty foods that we have found as good if not better than name brand. My kids like the cheese curls better than the name brand. We buy nuts, chips, and fruit in the cup, and cereal there, too. You can go online to see what the week and the following week's specials are to help you plan on your money. Just try a few things you would normally purchase somewhere else and see if you like it. I will tell you that at our Aldi's, the produce is so fresh that if you don't get there before noon, it is well picked over and they may even be out of something, so I always plan a morning trip there when I go. Their reusable grocery bags are large and hold a great amount and are very strong. I think they cost about 2 dollars but is well worth it. I keep them in my vehicle and find when I shop other stores that use the plastic bags, that I can put 3 or 4 of them in the Aldi's bag and lessen my trips in and out of the house carrying those plastic bags and worrying if they are going to bust open! Oh, and last spring, I purchased cushions for the chairs on our decks for a fraction of what they would have cost at Walmart or Target or other such store. They held their color thru the spring, summer and fall, and we will reuse them again this year. You never know what you will find there-it's kind of like a treasure hunt! Aldi's is like any other store - you will find things you like and a few you don't! One thing I do not buy there is the frozen seafood. They have a large selection but seems most comes from Asian waters and I don't knowingly purchase seafood garnered from that area of the world. It looks wonderful and it sells a lot in our area; just personal choice. Hope you give them another try!

Wow, I had no idea! I know they are 'related' to Trader Joe's...and I have purchased 'unknowns' there...I actually ran in on my lunch and didn't have time to really shop.
One thing for sure...it was an incredibly clean and tidy store. That I noticed right away!
I guess I need to give them a fair shake! LOL The cash thing throws me though...I haven't had cash in my purse since I had kids!
