Good weather for GINGERBREAD...

Cool and gloomy day and I thought that gingerbread would be perfect. I made a cake of it and  DH thought it was good just the way it was, but I think it could use some sweetening up.

What simple frosting or sauce might be a good companion? Or is there a traditional one that is used?

Thanks for any ideas. I have gotten really greyt tips here!

Yesterday I made gingerbread muffins and I frosted them with butter cream icing , and they are scrumptious.I think cream cheese icing would be delicious also.😋

Gingerbread takes me back to my young years. Mom used to make it all the time. When they had the money, we'd have real whipped cream on top. I've always loved it.

Re: Good weather for GINGERBREAD...

Gingerbread is one of my favorite flavors, this time of year, or anytime! I've only ever made gingerbread cookies years ago, but have never made cupcakes or a cake...but you make me want to!

I tend to make pumpkin bread/cakes more in the fall...but really need to get a good gingerbread recipe. If anyone has a great one to share...

Btw, those cookies I made were with a friend of mine...we made her aunt's (no longer here) recipe, we lament we no longer have! They were SO good...spicy, thin, crisp. My friend's SO inadvertently tossed a family recipe box...😱☹️...Yikes, a big bummer. No one else has the recipe.

All of the frosting mentioned sound good for it. Butter cream, cream cheese, I think are the classics for gingerbread but whipped cream is good too.

Brings back nice memories!  My mom would make gingerbread and serve it with a dollap of cool whip!

I make the icing for a German chocolate cake, minus the coconut, to eat with gingerbread.  Serve separately.

My grandma used to serve it with a warm orange sauce:

1 1/3 cup orange juice

1 tsp orange zest

1/2 cup sugar

4 tsp cornstarch

2 tbsp butter

1 tbsp lemon juice

Stir orange juice, sugar, and cornstarch in saucepan and boil until thick.  Off heat, stir in butter, lemon juice, and orange zest.

Similar idea to the orange sauce is lemon curd.  You can buy it ready made in a jar at Trader Joe's or grocery stores n the jam/jelly section.  Gingerbread with a dollop of lemon sauce/curd is a childhood memory from school lunches in high school.  Love it!

When my mother made gingerbread, we always topped it with whipped cream. I always did the same for my children.
