I make the icing for a German chocolate cake, minus the coconut, to eat with gingerbread.  Serve separately.

@deepwaterdotter : This sounds delicious. My mother always made a lemon sauce and regret that when we moved her recipe were misplaced. I have tried to recreate the recipes but no success with the lemon sauce.

Re: Good weather for GINGERBREAD...

@SouthernBee  My SIL makes this lemon sauce she serves with a blueberry Bundt cake:

1/2 cup sugar

4 1/2 tsp cornstarch

1 tsp lemon zest

1 cup water

1 tbsp butter

2 tbsp lemon juice

Whisk sugar, cornstarch, and lemon zest in saucepan.  Slowly whisk in water until mixed.  Whisk while boiling until sauce thickens.  Off heat, stir in butter and lemon juice.

Similar idea to the orange sauce is lemon curd.  You can buy it ready made in a jar at Trader Joe's or grocery stores n the jam/jelly section.  Gingerbread with a dollop of lemon sauce/curd is a childhood memory from school lunches in high school.  Love it!

(my name is orchidlover, guess I will have to correct that somewhere)
