Re: Gingerbread Cake with Lemon Sauce

[ Edited ]

This sounds right up my ally as I just love gingerbread anything, but never make it!

Anyone think maybe orange would work as well? Lemon seems a bit sharp to me for this, though it's probably good. Just wondering...I think I've seen an orange glaze on spice cakes, so thinking it would work.

Also whoever said there's a Vanilla nutmeg option sounds good too.

Thing is...right now I have an abundance of holiday food and sweets sitting in my house that didn't get eaten due to my getting sick the day before Christmas Eve...so I just may put off making this. But I love when I see a baking recipe where I already have the ingredients in the house and can just get up and make it one day! Thanks for poisting @Knit-Chick

@amyb I think orange would also be good!  Yeah.... I ate a piece of this along with cookies for breakfast this morning, so I know what you mean about too many sweets laying around!

Re: Gingerbread Cake with Lemon Sauce

This has been a favorite of mine since elementary school; it was served in the cafeteria once a week.  All the kids would use their finger to get the last bit of sauce off their tray!

Re: Gingerbread Cake with Lemon Sauce

This is the recipe my mom used for lemon sauce ..it's over 50 years old and she served it over gingerbread.

1/2 cup sugar  (that's 'one half')

 3 Tablespoons cornstarch

 1/4 teaspoon salt

 1 Tablespoon lemon rind

 2 cups boiling water

 4 Tablespoons butter

3 Tablespoons lemon juice

Dash nutmeg (optional)

Combine sugar, cornstarch and salt in saucepan. Add boiling water, 'gradually', stirring contantly.  Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes or until clear and thickened, stir constantly.  Stir in remaining ingredients.
