General Tsos Meatballs

General Tso's Meatballs
(recipe source: IbreatheImhungry.com)

These meatballs are truly delicious. The flavors really come together. I could not believe how much we enjoyed these. I browned them in a pan until crisp and served them with steamed broccoli and pea pods. Yum!

Meatballs

1 lb extra lean ground turkey or chicken
2 tablespoons minced ginger
1/4 cup scallions, chopped
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 egg
Salt & Pepper to taste
light flavored oil for frying (olive, grapeseed, etc) OR.. you can bake these! (see **Note below)

Sauce
1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1/4 cup water mixed with 1.5 teaspoons cornstarch
3 tablespoons honey
1/4 cup scallions, chopped
2-3 small dried chilies, de-seeded and chopped (wear gloves - if your adding them)

To make the meatballs:
Combine all of the meatball ingredients and mix thoroughly. Form into 16 balls and saute/fry in oil over medium heat until cooked through and crispy. Alternatively you could bake them but they won’t get the crunchy exterior.

To make the sauce:
Combine the sesame oil, vinegar, soy sauce, water, honey, and cornstarch/water slurry in a small saucepan and whisk until combined. Add the scallions and chili pepper and bring to a boil. Simmer for five minutes until thickened and remove from heat.

To serve:
Add the cooked meatballs to the thickened sauce and stir to coat. Garnish with more chopped scallions and chilis if desired.

**Note: Instead of pan frying you can bake at 350 for 18-20 minutes.

Lola, I think I'm going to be making this sometime this weekend! The chicken pot pie crumble was to die for! It is going into my repoirtoire!

I have a question about the peppers...when I order General Tso chicken, I always ask for mild and a couple of peppers find their way into my dish but I find their heat does not permeate the entire dish. I see all kinds of peppers labled as "chilli peppers" and that's not a vegetable I know much about....what exactly am I looking for? I would really like something really low on the Scoville scale, but the rest of my family likes heat. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Poodlepet (PS: I'm so sensitive to the heat from pepper, even thinking about them is making me break a sweat!)

Sabatini.... Hi! So welcome. I've never had anything like this before and they were amazing! I'm a fan!

Bigkat....Hi! You're welcome. have some leftovers; come on over! lol

Poodlepet.... Hi! You are welcome! I'm so happy that you enjoyed the pot pie. It's a keeper, huh?! lol
Regarding the meatballs..... You could always use a small, seeded jalapeno pepper or even a tiny bit of crushed red pepper flakes. Or... leave them out completely (i did for my kids) and it was honestly still really good. Hope this helps.

Happy Thursday, Ladies,

LoLa

I wouldn't cook anything this complicated but if I did....I would definitely make these meat balls. They sound and look delish! I sent the recipe to my daughter. Maybe she'll get the hint and make them when we visit her this Sunday.
