My mom called the macaroni, ground beef, tomato, onion, ,green pepper concotion Slum Gullion. I thought she made that name up but Ive googled it before and that is British in origin ( the name, not necessarily the dish of course) Such a good comfort food.

@PA Mom-mom  that is the way I grew up having it and I make it that way now, I love goulash and prefer to have it instead of spaghetti.

My husbands family is Slavic and goulash is beef stew made with chunks of beef browned with onions, garlic, caraway seeds, paprika and tomato sauce.

You cook all of that with a beef broth and peppers.  At the end you add sour cream and a little flour to thicken it.

It is sometimes served with noodles or potatoes on the side, but not mixed in.

My MIL was born in Europe.  I have never seen or heard if it made with hamburger, potatoes or pasta.

@LizzieInSRQ   My Mom made a dish she called Slum Gullion too, but I can't remember what it was.

I need to make a pot of that soon, I love it. Seems I don't make it the same way twice, sort of like I make soup. Whatever I need to use up goes in the pot! @Luvsmyfam that sounds great!

Just made a batch two weeks ago. Hamburger, diced tomatoes, elbow macaroni, onion, green pepper, tomato soup. For seasoning, a bit of chili powder, paprika and pepper. I always sprinkle some shredded cheese on top of my casseroles.
