French Onion Beef Sliders - Host the Toast

Sending this recipe over to my DIL as another slider option. My son and his wife are hosting the Saturday playoff games at their house. This recipe serves 24, but could easily be cut in half to make 12 sliders. I would suggest the King's Hawaiian rolls just because they are easy to find and also delicious.

Gruyere cheese is suggested, but recipe author also says swiss cheese would work too. Might also be delicious to have horseradish sauce available. I think these will be tasty as all get out.

French Onion Beef Sliders for a Crowd - Host the Toast

INGREDIENTS
8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, divided
2 large sweet onions, sliced
2 pounds ground beef
2 tablespoons beef base (such as Better than Boullion), divided
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, divided
Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
24 slider buns
12–16 ounces gruyere or swiss cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 tablespoon fresh thyme
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder

DIRECTIONS
Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add in the onions and reduce the heat to medium low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly caramelized, about 25-30 minutes. If the onions start to look dry or burnt, add a tablespoon of water to the pan.

In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with 1 tbs of the beef base and 1/2 tbs of the Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper.

Add the beef to the skillet full of onions. Increase heat to medium-high and brown the beef, breaking it up and mixing with the onions as you go. Once browned, drain off excess grease.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Separate the tops from the bottoms of the slider buns. Fit the slider bottom buns tightly on the baking sheet.

Evenly distribute the beef and onion mixture over the bottom buns. Top with the gruyere cheese. Cover with the top buns

.

In a microwave safe bowl, melt 6 tbs butter with 1 tbs beef base. Stir in 1/2 tbs Worcestershire sauce and continue to mix until well-combined. Using a pastry brush, brush the beefy butter mixture over the top buns. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds, thyme, onion powder, and garlic powder.

Bake the sliders until the cheese is fully melted and the tops of the rolls are lightly browned, about 20 minutes.

I'm a sucker for grilled onions and gruyere cheese together ... reminds me of French Onion soup ... which I love.

I thought this recipe would be easy to put together and delicious to eat. I'm pretty sure my husband and my two sons will devour these on Saturday.

@kate2357- I wonder, what if you mixed the onion in with the ground beef and made little patties.

I love french onion soup as well.

@qbetzforreal

That's the beauty of sliders...you can make them however you want.

I often use a recipe as inspiration for making a version that appeals to me.

@qbetzforreal

My DIL did a test run of the beef sliders last night and she did make some little patties up w/o the onions for the kids to try ... they loved them. For my son she made them up following recipe and he thought they were great ... BUT ... he thought adding sliced mushrooms to the mix would be tasty. So I think that's what she's going to do on Saturday when the crowd comes over to watch football. They really liked the coating on top of the rolls ... thought it made them really good.
