That is neat. As I quickly scanned through the info, I got to thinking about a dish that was served a lot in the 60s-- creamed chipped beef on toast. The more popular name used for it was s*** on a shingle. I blush to even type it, thus the asterisks. Anyone remember that dish? No one seems to serve it anymore.

My Grandpa used to make that for us for lunch.  Now I am hungry for it.  Can you even buy smoked dried beef anymore?

I'm not a fan of SOS, but my daughter and husband love it.  One of our local diners serves it -- and it seems to be a popular dish!

When beef wasn't available, we just used those small packets of thin, sliced ham which sell for around 60 cents at Aldi's.

 

 I recall dried beef used to be sold in small jars.  Hopefully, someone who knows may post and tell us where we can get it.

For those that would like to try SOS without making a lot of servings, this recipe is from @Barbarainnc and it is absolutely delicious (I love it):

 

Low Carb SOS for One
 
4 oz hamburger meat browned with some chopped onion. Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Add 1 cup half and half or cream, 2 oz cream cheese. Stir and add water if needed. Add some soy sauce for color and flavor. Cook alittle and serve over fried eggs. 
My dad was a Marine and made his version all the time when I was growing up. We ate it for breakfast and dinner. He served his on toast with fried eggs on top with a side of fried diced potatoes. YUM YUM!

Yes, dried chipped beef is still sold in jars and also in a plastic packet somewhere near the sausage/hot dog/bacon cured meat refrigerated section in the grocery store--can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure that's  correct.

 

.  About a year ago, I bought some so I could try out a recipe that was billed as an elegant chicken dish to serve to company.  One of the steps involved soaking the beef for a few minutes in water to eliminate some of the extreme saltiness, then lining a casserole dish with the beef and placing other ingredients on top.

 

I haven't seen it in a long time but our local stores used to sell Stouffer's creamed chipped beef in the frozen dinner section.

That sounds delicious and the salt can be adjusted or not added at all if it's a problem.  I like that!  Thanks for sharing.

My previous message was edited  to add that Stouffer's creamed chipped beef was once sold in the frozen food section of our local stores--it was one of its red boxed entrees.  I can't recall seeing it lately, but can't say I've been looking for it, so  fans of that dish might want to look there.
