Tried and true. Be very careful though when pouring. Hot melted sugar is a bad combination if it hits bare skin.

Crunchy Chocolate Toffee

1 cup butter
1-1/3 cups sugar
1 tablespoon corn syrup
2 tablespoons water
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups chocolate chips or butterscotch chips
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped

Line a 13 x 9 inch baking dish with foil and lightly grease it with butter.

In a 2-quart microwave-safe glass bowl (think Pyrex), combine the butter, sugar, corn syrup and water.

Microwave on high for 10-12 minutes until golden brown, stirring twice during microwaving.

Stir in the vanilla.

Carefully pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.

Sprinkle with the chocolate or butterscotch chips and let rest for 2 minutes.

Spread the chocolate evenly and sprinkle it with the chopped nuts, pressing them into the chocolate.

Chill the mixture until cool.

Break it into uneven pieces and place them in a decorative tin or serve on a platter.

Makes about 1 lb of toffee.
