When I was growing up (50/60's), my mother made the best Chili Sauce that she would serve as a side with beef dinners. It was so good! She would spend a whole day preparing, cooking and canning it. Of all the recipes of hers that I have, I do not have this one.
This is not Chili (with beef) but a Chili SAUCE. Just wondering if anyone has an "old" recipe. I can also do a search for it.

@walker. I know exactly what you're talking about. My family, as I was growing up, ate that stuff by the quart. Mom made it using the recipe in the red and white BH&G cookbook. It was delicious.
I made it once when dh "surprised" me with crates of tomatoes he bought somewhere.
Let me know if you don't have access to that cookbook and I'll see if I can find it.

@Kachina624 ....thank you for response! I bet that is where my mother found the recipe...BH&G Cookbook. She talked about that being her first cookbook where she learned how to cook. If you find a recipe, I would love to have it. In meantime, I will research BH&G cookbooks if I can. It was good! Glad you knew it as well. Delicious memories!

I used to make/can chili sauce from end of the garden tomatoes and peppers. I heated the tomatoes and ran them thru a sieve to remove skins and seeds. Cooked this about 2 hours with chopped onions, green peppers, sugar, salt, vinegar, cinnamon and cloves, until reduced and a bit thicker. Poured into clean hot jars and water bathed 5-10 minutes.

@walker. Now I'm embarrassed. I went to my bookcase of cookbooks and they're all there except the BH&G. Can't imagine where it is. I haven't looked for it for years.
@RedTop. Do you have an actual recipe? Your ingredients sound like it.
I looked online and found Chile recipes.

Mom and I used a recipe from a canning book when we made the chili sauce. I just remember those ingredients from making it so often; we adjusted the amount of ingredients based on the amount of tomato purée we started with.

@walker. I found these ingredients by googling "caning chili sauce" under a Ball Jar website. It's called Grandma's Chili Sauce. It sound about right.

I'm surprised more people don't make this concoction as it's one of the yummiest condiments you can serve with beef dishes.
Grind some roast beef in a Vitamix, add mayo to taste and stir in some chili sauce for the best sandwich spread you ever ate.
It also makes a wonderful gift for friends and neighbors.

Interesting post. My mom never made chili sauce, but she canned a lot of tomatoes for chili. We had tons of horseradish in our garden. I was just cleaning my basement and found the grinder we used when we made horseradish. It made my eyes water as I put it through the grinder!
