I make a simple cabbage and potato soup from a recipe at a local lunchroom:
8 slices of bacon, cut into 1" pieces
1 1/2 lbs russet potatoes, cut in small cubes
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 lb cabbage, cut into 2" pieces
4 cups chicken broth
2 bay leaves
Fry bacon in big saucepan until crispy, then drain on paper towel. Cook potatoes, cabbage, salt, and peppper in grease until cabbage softens. Stir in broth and bay leaves and bring to boil. Cover and cook over lowered heat until potatoes are tender.
Off heat, mash a few potatoes to thicken a little bit. Remove bay leaves and stir in bacon. I like to pour a few splashes of hot sauce on top before eating. The restaurant offers sour cream on request.

The weight loss cabbage soup consists of mainly cabbage, carrots, onions, water, and tomato juice. Eat all you want and it flushes your system. NO beans, potatoes, or pasta in this soup!
Stuffed green pepper soup, cabbage roll soup, all call for ground beef. I love shredded cabbage in vegetable soup, but my husband hates cooked cabbage in any form.

@deepwaterdotter Thanks! I'll bet ham would work too because we almost always have that in the freezer, but hardly ever have bacon.

@Sooner I'm sure ham would be tasty also. If you keep a jar of bacon grease in your freezer (I do), you could just cook the vegetables in a couple tablespoons.

@Love to read The ingredients in your cabbage soup recipe
sound very good and I would like to try it. The only liquid I see
is 3/4 cup water and the liquid from the canned tomatoes. With
1 lb. of turkey, a bag of cabbage and the other vegetables, that does not seem like enough liquid. Does it need any other broth added? How many servings does it make?
Is it more like a thick stew or a casserole?
