Here on the East coast Boar’s Head is considered a premium lunch meat brand and you pay premium prices for it. Our deli doesn’t preslice lunch meats, but some of the ones in the Outer Banks do, especially during peak vacation season. I’ve never had a problem with it spoiling, but I would definitely take it back to the store if I did. I hadn’t thought about giving it a sniff before leaving the deli counter, but that’s a great idea. I always have a few coolers with me when I go grocery shopping and the lunch meat is one of items that goes in for the ride home.

@Jordan2  I used to buy Boars head Tavern ham & Turkey at the Military Commissary. I had to order it then do my shopping and return the length of the store and still it sometimes wasn’t ready.

They do a huge business and I’ve never had any spoiled. But I read a health article that a much larger percentage of deli cold cuts have more bacteria than packaged meats. (I don’t remember the percentage).

When employees get busy and don’t clean the slicers, and sometimes not clean them after cutting ham, then slice cheese it can become cross contaminated.

Since I read that I have been buying a good Tavern ham at Aldi that’s better, cheaper and hopefully less bacteria!

Now I don’t have to wait for cold cuts and feel better about contamination.

I don’t wash lunch meat but when I wash other meat I use filtered water.

I find that if I seal the Boar's Head deli meats and cheeses using the FreshSaver and a new bag, it lasts a lot longer in my refrigerator. Hope this helps.

There are two markets where I by Boars Head ... never had an issue buying spoiled meat.

I never buy more than I'll use in the next couple of days because the shelf life isn't very long.

i sometimes keep them in a lock and lock and it does seem to help them stay fresh a bit longer.

I thought food sanitation laws had changed and they were no longer permitted to pre slice deli meat and have it in the deli case for sale. All of the major stores in my area that I shop at stopped that practice a few years ago. I asked st one store once after they stopped and the person I spoke with said they were no longer permitted to do that, everything has to be sliced on order. Maybe this is just in my state. BH is the only deli meat I buy and only no salt added turkey breast, turkey pastrami, or 25% reduced sodium Black Forest ham. All of these are very low points on WW or zero points. Mine usually last at least five days. As others have stated probably best to shop at a deli where there is high traffic for BH or any other deli meat for that matter.

I keep mine in a lock n lock with a paper towel on the bottom and top of the deli product. I change the paper towel daily. I do this because I don’t like wet meat and I feel it helps it last a little longer.

I live in NYC and shop mostly at King Kullen. They do slice some meats in advance and are in a case for those that don't want to wait on line at the deli counter. I never buy those and always have them slice it for me (which doesn't seem to help).

Boar's Head is the only brand of luncheon meat I buy since my store chain changed from Deitz and Watson.  I have never had any trouble.

I never buy over 1/3 to 1/2 lb.  Everytime I close it, I press the air out and keep it in the bottom drawer of the fridge in the back.
