I expect to make this Yankee Magazine blueberry buckle recipe shortly.  It is very much like the one in my old Betty Crocker book.  Does anyone have a favorite version, or do you all think they are pretty much the same?


Blueberry Buckle


Total Time: 55 minutes
Hands-On Time: 15 minutes
Yield: 12


For the cake Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups wild Maine blueberries
InstructionsPreheat oven to 375° and butter a 9x9-inch baking pan. In a large bowl or in the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, scraping the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula as necessary. Add the egg and combine.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk, until well combined. Add the blueberries and fold a few times with a rubber spatula until just combined. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan. 
For the topping Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
InstructionsIn a small bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Add the butter and combine until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the top of the batter.

Bake until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean, about 40 minutes.

I don’t have a recipe, but please let us know how it is.  I’d like to try it if you like it. Of course it will have to wait until the heat abates a bit, I don’t turn on the oven if it can be avoided in this sweltering weather.

I’ve never made this but I will now.  It looks fluffy moist, lots of blueberries with crumb topping...yum!  This would be great for brunch or anytime.  Thanks for sharing.

I have never heard of it but looks Delish.

@Homegirl, this recipe looks terrific. I just copied it and will make it (when I get some blueberries this week!). I've heard of "buckle" recipes, but didn't really know what they were. Thanks for posting it.

How can you go wrong if it calls for a crumb topping?
