Re: Basil Versus Cilantro...

I love them both and have fresh basil and cilantro around most of the time.

Re: Basil Versus Cilantro...

No vs. for me.  I'm an equal opportunity consumer of both!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Absolutely love pizza w/ oregano and basil - Margherita Pizza

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Absolutely love pesto ..

My favorite grilled cheese:  Two slices of whole grain bread with pesto spread on both slices, Provolone cheese.

  • Pesto pasta salad w/ lots of olives!

---------------------------------------------------

I use Celantro mainly when I'm making peach salsa w/ salmon burgers.

It's a Weight Watchers recipe and absolutely delicious!

Re: Basil Versus Cilantro...

I like basil, DH does not.  (Though, truth be told, I use it in dishes and if he doesn't know, he loves it.). One time I put whole basil leaves on a sandwich and it grossed him out.  I guess that was wrong!

I'm not fond of cilantro, though I'll eat food prepared with it.

The best, most underused herb I've encountered is lovage.  Yum.  If I could just get it to grow in my garden.

Grilled cheese and the peach salsa with salmon as you described will be on my menu this week. My goodness, they both sound good.

Re: Basil Versus Cilantro...

I prefer Sweet Basil and grow it in the garden.

I know I prefer it because a few years ago I pinched a bit of fresh cilantro leaf while shopping and tasted it.

    Ewwwww...gross!!!!!

Why would anyone put this in their food? Aghhhhhh yuk!!!  Tastes like chips whittled off an old bar of Lifebuoy soap.

Re: Basil Versus Cilantro...

I’m Italian born and we Italians do not use cilantro in any food.

I think it may be in our DNA to hate it and not allow it in our house.

Yuck, cilantro tastes like soap to me. My younger sister loves it.  She says it tastes fresh and wonderful.  I am jealous.I want to love it too.

I'm not a big fan of either herb.  Basil has more of a licorice flavor than is my liking, and cilantro's flavor is too soapy-tasting for me.  I will include basil in dishes where other ingredients can lessen the licorice flavor.

Fennel seed tastes like licorice to me, but  not basil.  It's interesting how tastes buds differ in everyone.
