Re: Authentic Michigan Pasty recipe wanted!

Ok here goes the one I have from our last visit to the U.P.

Filing

2 lbs. round steak, 1/4" cubes

5 Lg. potatoes, peeled, 1/4" cubes

1 sm. turnip or rutabaga, 1/4" cubes

1-2 lg. onions, finely chopped

1 Tblspn. salt

1 tsp. fresh ground pepper

DOUGH

4 c. flour, sifted

2 tsp. salt

1-1 1/2 C. shortening

10 Tbsp. ice water

Cut shortening into flour & salt until mixture is coarse. Rub flour together in fingers to produce a coarse crumb. Add water and form into ball. Divide into 6 equal rolled balls. Dust with flour, seal in plastic wrap. Chill 1 hour. Mix steak with vegetables, onion, salt & pepper. Roll each dough ball on lightly floured surface to a 9" circle. Add 1-1 1/2 C. filling to each. Fold pastry over to create 1/2 moon shaped pies. Seal the edges & cut small slits in top. Bake on cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 45-50 minutes., until golden brown.

Waving Hi To All The Michiganders!

When I saw Vernors I just had to stop by and say Hi and let you know how much this thread made me smile! Smiley Happy

Have a 6 pack of Vernors on the floor. Little chilly, think I'll crack open a can and heat some up. Better yet, anyone want a Boston Cooler??

I'm also stopping by. I was born and raised in Michigan. I had to smile at the Vernors reference also. While we didn't have much Vernors in the house, we did have Faygo Red Pop. Would you believe I have never eaten a pasty?

DiAnne, they are a type of turnover made with meat and veggies. They originated with the miners in Northern Michigan who would take them in their lunchboxes starting in the 1800's. They have now achieved cult status among Michiganders. Or, Michiganians. Your choice, lol!

ETA: the word is pronounced pas - tee, not paste - ee, if that makes sense. Gotta be authentic!

Hi radimage!! Are you in central Florida year round? We are snowbirds who are so happy to be here (in relative warmth) and not battling the snow and 35 below wind chills in the Big Mitten. However, there is nothing better than Michigan in the other three seasons of the year, right???

Hi fellow Mighiganders, yep, this state is the place to be. Temps are 34 here this a.m., it's a regular heat wave. LOL

Hi, I moved here last March. Following the jobs. This is my first warm Winter since I was in California in the 80's. This has been a brutal Winter, and I'm not sad to have missed it.

My snow shovel is officially retired.

Re: Authentic Michigan Pasty recipe wanted!

I'm in MI! We're having a winter to beat all winters! I'm loving every minute of it! We have so much snow now that you don't know where to throw it anymore when shoveling. I'm reading this morning that there are so many snow-maker systems coming our way that it should be snowing every few days for the next two weeks! Faygo pop, Vernors and pasties are a staple in my household. Love my Michigan! It warms my heart to see others loving my state too! Smile
