I have had these bars so many times and I have never made them. Could someone please give me the recipe. I would like to make them for Fathers Day. I am having about 15 people over for a barbecue and most will be young people with big appetites. I will also be making another dessert. Any suggestions.  Thanks.

7 layer bars.....aka magic bars.......a classic!

i do believe that the recipe is usually on a can of  eagle brand condensed milk. sometimes i switch out the flavor of the chips OR use toffee bits instead for one of the chips.

  • Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 cup (6 oz.) butterscotch-flavored chips
  • 1 cup (6 oz. pkg.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions
  • HEAT oven 350°F. Spray 13 x 9-inch baking pan with no-stick cooking spray.
  • COMBINE graham cracker crumbs and butter; mix well. Press crumb mixture firmly into bottom of prepared pan. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over crumb mixture. Layer evenly with remaining ingredients; press down firmly with fork.
  • BAKE 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Loosen from sides of pan while still warm; cool on wire rack. Cut into bars or diamonds.
  • For perfectly cut cookie bars, line entire pan with foil, extending foil over edge of pan. Coat lightly with no-stick cooking spray. After bars have baked and cooled, lift up by edges of foil to remove from pan. Cut into individual bars.

if you are doing these bar cookies and still want to make another dessert, i would keep the second dessert very simple. the bar cookies are VERY sweet, so i would probably do a simple pound cake served with some berries and freshly whipped cream.

These have been my favorite since my Grandmother made them for me back a few decades.  I like to change up the chips for the seasons such as pumpkin spice chips in the fall.  I have also seen this recipe but have not tried it with cranberries added for the fall season too.  What a great treat for Father's Day.

I bought the stuff to make that during the holidays. I still have not made it. LOL!!! It's really good but it's also really sweet.

they definitely are! you need a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of milk to go with them!

Which is why I always agree with Dolly Pardon's line from Steel Magnolias "which is why I serve it with ice cream to cut the sweetness!"  Good advice for me to live by.  Thought of these bars last night now I need to make this week-end.

I have made these bars in the past and they are delicious, but I always have trouble getting them out of the pan.  The crust never sticks together well and they are crumbly.  Any suggestions?

I make this recipe as a pie, using a graham cracker crust.   I prefer to stir everything together, with some of the coconut and nuts on the top, instead of layering.   I made this last night, but only used one cup total of peanut butter and chocolate chips.   I baked this for 35 minutes until the crust and coconut was brown, and the pie was bubbling.
